THE WIVES
Cigarettes
1980 Canada pressing

THE BATTERED WIVES changed their name on this, their 2nd album, because the Women Against Violence Against Women org complained.
Instead of telling them to go fuck themselves, they capitulated, only to return to the original name on the 3rd album.

NOWHERE near as great as the first, this has a few really tight, catchy songs, & is worth having.
They were fully a #newwave band, not #punk as their Discogs page states.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
Tunnel Of Love
1987 Canada pressing

Another week gone.
Music time.

Bruce’s divorce album, with a ton of synths & drum machines.

I was 10 years old when this came out. I had heard of him and was quite aware of his music, but this was the first album of his that spoke to ME.

I remember the first time hearing “Brilliant Disguise” and thinking “That’s a great song.”
This is still my favorite Springsteen album all these years later.

TERENCE TRENT D’ARBY
Introducing The Hardline According To Terence Trent D'Arby
1987 Canada pressing

File under:
A very VERY poor man’s Prince.

D’Arby thought he was more talented than he actually was. Although this album IS very good, it was all he ever had to offer.
This didn’t turn out to be “the most significant thing to happen to music since Sgt. Pepper’s” like he told everyone, & the rest of his career was, well… can we call it a CAREER?

PARIS WORKING
The Paris Working
1983 U.S. pressing

A blind gamble that paid off handsomely.

A short, but excellent #synthpop / #newwave listen.

These 5 songs were their ONLY songs, as it appears this was their only release.

A pretty obscure but fantastic little E.P. for fans of the genre.
The guitar work on “Pieces Of Heaven” is really great, and sounds like it could have been in an #80s John Hughes movie.

SAMANTHA FOX
Touch Me (I Want Your Body)
1986 Canada 12” E.P.

She had great personality (cups invisible breasts with hands), & a great sense of humour (cups invisible ass with hands).

I have my older sister to thank for my Fox obsession, both musically (just the first album), & as my first sexual fantasy.
I understand she would have never been allowed near a studio if she looked like Walter Matthau.
Apparently, she’s a lesbian now.
And 60!

TWISTED SISTER
Come Out And Play
1985 Canada pressing

Truly a reprehensibly BAD album, & honestly what killed their career.
An utter abomination.

So why do I own it?
Because regardless of it’s terror, this was the 1st album I ever bought with my own money.
A cassette copy, from the Grafton Flea Market, age 9, for .25 cents.
It’s solely for sentimental purposes.

Every ten years, I put it on thinking it’s not that bad.
Spoiler alert:
It ABSOLUTELY is.

DOLBY’S CUBE
Howard The Duck
1986 Canada 12” single

Another from todays haul of fun 12”s.

The movie?
Truly one of the greatest abortions in cinematic history.

However, ever since I first saw it on TV when I was 8, the songs always stuck in my head.
Here, you get the extended version, the OG version on the soundtrack, & “Don’t Turn Away” which, on the soundtrack has Dolby singing it.
HERE, it’s the movie version sung by Lea Thompson.

EDDIE MURPHY
Party All The Time
1985 Canada 12”

My local shop was having a clearance blowout on all their 12” singles today, & I was happy to take a handful of gems off their hands.

If someone asked you to pick 1 song from the #1980s that sounded like cocaine, it’s this one.

Rick James’ involvement alone gets it through the front door.

I have always loved this song, & always will.
So glad to own this, at bare minimum for “Leather Eddie” on the cover. 😂
