Massive Crowds March Downtown Against Trump, Musk At ‘Hands Off’ Protest

An estimated 30,000 people joined the Chicago edition of the “Hands Off” day of action, which saw communities across the country protest President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s cuts to government and stripping of rights.

"Hands Off!" in Seattle Center had massive turnout and was a bittersweet experience. I was struck by the diversity in motivations, stories, causes - so much anger, pain, and yet resilience in the community. So many different lives affected and coming together as one.

About 25,000 attendees in downtown Seattle all spoke out against the toxic, destructive Trump administration. If you are in the United States and are hurt, angry, or scared - consider donating to Indivisible (https://indivisible.org) or to the ACLU (https://action.aclu.org/give/pm-donate-to-aclu). Even signing up for their email lists will let you learn about upcoming events or volunteer opportunities.

And of course, US citizens have elected officials that are meant to represent you. You can identify who represents you by entering your address here: https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials. The ACLU has helpful tips on how to write to them at https://www.aclu.org/writing-your-elected-representatives.

There is no action too small that we can take to make ourselves heard.

‘Hands Off’ rally in Saranac Lake
Hundreds of locals rally to protest federal government

"The protestors want the government’s #HandsOff a lot of things — immigrants, veterans’ #health care, #LGBTQ+ rights, #SocialSecurity, schools, #women, #penguins, the #FirstAmendment, the climate, #Canada, #Greenland and the #Constitution. Signs primarily focused on #DonaldTrump and his billionaire advisor #ElonMusk."

"Demonstrators... united in opposition to the #Trump administration with the single message: "Hands off!"

"We took an oath long ago to protect against all enemies foreign and domestic, and I don't think either Sonya or I ever imagined that we would have to kick in on the domestic piece of our oath, but we have, we are, and we will," said Boland, who said she served in the Army and Air Force. "

I do see hope in the demonstrations in the USA.

" #VoteBlue No Matter What" was _never_ going to be enough to stop fascism in the country. Not that the Democrats aren't infinitely preferable to the Republicans right now, but they are too invested in the shitty status quo to get serious about fighting fascism, and they have too many billionaire donors shaping their policy decisions.

But mass protests in the streets _will_ make a lot of people who are nominally Trump supporters or "neutral" think twice. These are bad for business, and make Trump supporters think twice how far they want to go with their support.

The Third Reich did _not_ have such mass protests during its early days, so maybe Americans can still turn this around.

""Our founders wrote a #Constitution that did not begin with 'We the dictators,'" Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., told the crowd gathered on the National Mall in #WashingtonDC, where organizers said over 100,000 people gathered.

He slammed the administration for several of its policies, including Donald Trump's implementing of #tariffs on nearly every country."

"The crowd easily numbered in the tens of thousands, starting with an afternoon kickoff in Pershing Square, followed by a march to City Hall and a sunset rally there that filled the street and adjacent Grand Park.

The #demonstration was peaceful, colorful and creative, but there also was a palpable and diverse sense of outrage"

"Over 1,400 “Hands Off!” mass-action protests were held at state capitols, federal buildings, congressional offices, Social Security’s headquarters, parks and city halls throughout the entire country – anywhere “we can make sure they hear us,” organizers said. “Hands Off!” demands “an end to this billionaire power grab.”"

Cops didn’t turn out for #HandsOff in order to save themselves for this:

“it was NYPD who shut down Grand Central entrances. We just wanted to platform our message to one of the largest transportation hubs in the world. NYPD shut down entrances because they don’t want people to hear that message”

"insurrectionary sentences... drawn from nature. One goes "They tried to bury us, but they didn't know we were seeds." Seeds germinate underground, and they send up their shoots in the springtime. The other sentence goes, "They can cut down the flowers but they can't stop the spring." Be seeds, be the spring. Be the insurrection. Be civil society. Be what happens."
