I found my dog bell in a manga. I researched more and learned that it is called inu hariko or paper mache dog. it is a symbol of protection, especially to children and pregnant women. There are many cute traditional designs. I encourage you to search for images to improve your mood.

Question for my #Japanese speaking friends:
I'd like to write a small thank you note for our guide before we leave because she has been the most patient and kind person I've ever met amongst a difficult group of older British tourists ... and then the two of us.
Mostly the note will be in English, but I'd like a short phrase in Japanese at the beginning to say thank you. It will be vertical.
Is there something better than ありがとうございます?
I just finished reading a so-called "science fiction" story by OSHIKAWA Shunrō (押川春浪)written in 1907 and titled, "Moon Exploration Competition" (月世界競争探検) and it was SO bad. This story always gets a nod in histories of #Japanese #SciFi, but to my mind it hardly qualifies as sci-fi. They do in fact go to the moon, but we learn nothing about the moon whatsoever. We don't even learn anything about the ships they used to get there, other than that they have flapping wings. You could quite literally do a search-and-replace, change every instance of "Moon" (月, 月世界, 月界) to "desert island" (無人島)and a reader would not think anything was odd, beyond the utter lack of detail about the desert island.
