I've long suspected that some IoT devices would attempt to circumvent my Pi-hole DNS sinkhole when they didn't like its answers. Now that I have a firewall where I can block all outbound DNS queries except those from the Pi-hole, come to learn that I was right... Not just IoT, but some iOS apps too.

Could it be benign, like firmware update checks? Sure, but call me suspicious, given the stuff Pi-hole is blocking in the first place.

[same in en]. I'm going to buy new data center switches. Until now, I used refurbished Arista switches (which work perfectly), but this is to distribute the network to about twenty higher education institutions; I can't afford the worn-out stuff. What brand would you use? Are there any European manufacturers?
We'll need 100 Gb and plenty of 10/25 Gb ports. I plan on using generic optical transceivers, though. #networking #switch #datacenter

NVME over TCP

blog.hardill.me.uk/2025/03/14/

I’ve played things like iSCSI before as a way to network boot a Raspberry Pi and have Docker work nicely and also as a Volume Provider for Kubernetes for things like Minio.

It’s a way to share block level devices over a network to different devices.

While SCSI has under pinned a lot of storage for a very long time, more recently a new player has entered the scene, specifically for accessing […]

TransFem SpaceOlivia A-C (@LivInTheLookingGlass)#FediHire | Software Engineer & Data Scientist | Chicago, IL, US | Remote Preferred, In-Office Okay :boost: I’m Olivia Appleton-Crocker, a software engineer with a strong background in backend development, data science, & research. I have an MS in Computer Science & Engineering from MSU, where I published papers on distributed systems. Currently a Data Science Fellow at the TMW Center, improving code coverage & diagnosing bugs. Previously at Intel, coordinating small teams & influencing NVMe spec changes. I’ve put extensive work into #OpenStreetMap, currently adding Chicago sidewalks, mapping my hometown, & leading disaster-response mapathons. Built overpassify–a transpiler for querying OSM data in idiomatic Python. Projects include adding UDPLite to CPython, adding fediverse comments to sphinx sites, & a multi-language Project Euler site. Proficient in Python, C/C++, Rust, JavaScript, C#, SQL, Fortran & more. Seeking roles in software engineering, data science, or research—especially in open-source, GIS, Rust, or distributed systems. @camilla_hoel @bookstodon There is this nice tradition of network admins from all over the globe to add a special "invisible" "X-Clacks-Overhead" HTTP header to their websites in memory of Terry Pratchett.

The header itself doesn't serve a function, but it is always nice to find it when analyzing network traffic and knowing that you are not alone in missing Terry Pratchett.

iKOOLCore R2 Max Review: Using this mini PC a network or storage appliance

The iKOOLCore R2 Max is a mini PC that launched late last year as a small, versatile computer designed for use as a networking appliance or general purpose computer. It supports up to an Intel Core 3 N355 Twin Lake processor and 32GB of RAM.

While the iKOOLCORE R2 I reviewed in 2023 was a palm-sized PC with two 2.5 Gb LAN ports, the new model is much larger and features four high-speed […]
