Haplogroup News :autistic: :ace: :n95: :p_pride:
Autistic Adult Perspectives on Occupational Therapy for Autistic Children and Youth | Sterman et al 2022

The Autistic community values neurodiversity-positive approaches rather than behavioral interventions for Autistic children; however, little is known about what that would look like in occupational therapy. Frequently, researchers seek parent perspectives for understanding Autistic children’s preferences, while to date insufficient attention has been paid to Autistic adults as valuable informants on the Autistic experience of Autistic children. The objective of the study was to understand Autistic adult perspectives on pediatric occupational therapy for Autistic children. We sought and thematically analyzed data from a large Facebook group and an occupational therapy podcast on Autistic values, needs, and experiences in pediatric occupational therapy. Participants described wanting therapy that supported Autistic identities rather than trying to “fix” children, changing environments or tasks to promote participation, and setting goals that address self-advocacy and autonomy. Occupational therapy practitioners should critically reflect on their practice’s alignment with Autistic values and start to shift their practice as needed.

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/15394492221103850 #AutisticValues #Ableism #OccupationalTherapy #Autonomy

OT Expert
Calling all healthcare professionals...

Are you aware that many people, especially those who are Autistic or otherwise neurodivergent, have sensory processing differences?

They (we) will often experience the sensory world differently, meaning they might have much more intense or much less intense experiences and reactions to sensory input from the environment than others.

This can be amazing in lots of ways (joy from vibrant colours, lovely intense smells from flowers that others don't experience...)

But it can also be very challenging in other ways (for example feeling nauseous from others' perfume, pain from bright florescent lights, pain and high anxiety from loud beeping machines or low electricity hums).

If you work in or run a clinic, ward or department with in or outpatients, chances are many will experience some level of discomfort from the sensory environment there.

Many (but not all) of these aspects can be adapted to be pleasant for everyone.
Light bulbs could be changed to be less bright, or dimmed, quiet rooms offered where possible, ear plugs/headphones offered.

You could ask each person if there are any aspects of the clinic/ward environment that is bothering them, and see what can be done about it.

Sometimes just listening and acknowledging there's even a problem is validating and reassuring.
_
@occtherapy #OccupationalTherapy
#Autistic #ADHD #HealthCare #Hospital #Sensory #AHPs #PhysioTherapy #Doctors #Dentists #Neurodivergent #Neurodiversity #Disability #HumanRights #DisabilityJustice

OT Expert
I am continually appalled by the DSM 5 autism diagnostic criteria.

I implore all health and social care professions (and everyone else too), to be better informed of what autism really is.

It is a difference in neurology - *not* a disorder.

We need to look at autism through the lens of the neurodiversity paradigm (See Dr. Nick Walker).

This does not dimiss any challenges or disability Autistic people may experience or have, (many of which are directly caused by the environment, society's attitude and (mis) understanding of Autistic people.

The language used in the DSM 5 is incredibly deficit-based and patholigised:

"Symptoms" "abnormal" "inappropriate" "persistent deficits".

It is also wholy wrong and dangerous to categorise autism into levels of severity. *There are no such levels*.

Many Autistic people fit the criteria for level 1, 2 and 3 within one day or week. The level of support needed for any individual (Autistic or not), greatly depends of various factors, including:

- How safe a person feels in that moment
- The context in that moment
- How suitable/conducive/hostile their environment is - at that time.
- The level of stress/anxiety that person is experiencing - at that time, or from past trauma.
- How understanding (or not) the people around them are, in that specific situation.

We all (humans) need a lot more support and would display more obvious signs of anxiety and distress if our individual needs are not met.

It's no help at all for some, for example to be given a 'diagnosis' of autism level 1, as people would see them as always only having 'mild/low' support needs.

This might be the case sometimes, but that person might be masking at times, or clearly be in distress at other times, needing support, or....

When the environment and situation is suitable, they might thrive and manage their tasks perfectly (e.g., a heart surgeon or content student at school).

Levels of autistic severity are a backwards step.

Please could all my fellow professionals take steps to better inform yourselves.

I'm happy to signpost to brilliant artles, training, resources... All Autistic-led.

Please boost if you agree.
