Kiran 🏳️‍⚧️
So a trans friend of mine recently attended her very first #PL conference #SPLASH #splash2024, I had kinda hyped up how inclusive the community was because of the number of like openly queer academics in the area I know of, and stuff like the co-located workshops and LGBTQ+ lunches, so I was hoping she'd get to interact with other queer academics and hopefully incentivise her to do more research? (she's a graduated undergrad, presenting some work she completed as part of her final year project).

Unfortunately didn't quite go as well as I hoped. Ofc, kinda to be expected, first time attending a conference, everything's new, it can be overwhelming, and esp being queer and trans it can be a lot of pressure to network with so many people~

What kinda bugged me however was hearing about her account of attending the LGBTQ+ lunch, because when she arrived, everyone who was there at the time was at one table, so no space for her, so she went and sat alone at another table, and then when the next group of people arrived, they looked at her table, and then just went to another one. I don't think they were being malicious, either they were new to PL themselves and didn't know what to do, or thought she was waiting for someone. Then as more people came in, they too went to the table with more people, leaving her alone throughout the lunch. Irrespective of the reason, imagine being an undergrad in a completely new situation, being queer and already feeling a bit out of place against cishet culture, and then having other queer ppl then just choose to avoid you. If you can't empathise, let me tell you, it fucking sucks. (It didn't help that this was before her talk, and the major SG HRT provider had just been closed down, so this was all a pretty fucking terrible time, and it would have been a great opportunity for the PL community to at least give her some support before her talk, but yeah that didn't happen.

Part of the reason it bugged me so much is it kinda reflects how insular junior PL researchers can be? like I've put up with this kinda treatment throughout my career, US academics seemingly
attend every PL conference, and it's pretty standard as a foreign student to feel out of place, as all the other students have anecdotes and shared experiences and inside jokes that they are more than happy to regale and share a laugh at as you have to awkwardly stand sheepishly in the crowd unable to contribute anything. Ofc, I guess part of this is just human nature and practicalities, if you meet researchers more often it'll be easier to chat with them, but I would have hoped that for a community that advertises its inclusivity, at least at the LGBTQ+ lunch, this kinda ostracisation of new researchers wouldn't have been as prevalent.

#academia #ProgrammingLanguages #PL #LGBTQ #Inclusivity #SPLASH #OOPSLA #OOPSLA24 #Trans #PL
