Didn't know I still have Signal from fdroid installed but I don't have a phone number or hell, anybody to talk to in private

Just one of the downsides of not having friends I guess. Regardless, I shall carry on like I've been doing for 5+ years now! It's hard but c'est la vie.

I do believe I'll outgrow it alone. Doesn't matter how many years it'll take but I believe the pain will go away soon.

Apple - censoring things? Never

I was asked by a relative to use #WhatsApp - and responded with the appropriate comments about Meta, Privacy, Security, Bastards etc. I suggested they use Signal (we do and for work as well). I then wanted to follow it up with a link (and we use #Apple desktops and laptops here backed up by a Linux farm). So I went to the appstore and searched on #Signal - this is what I was given. You need to get the link directly from Signal to find it.

Element/Matrix or Signal?

Right now none of my friends and contacts use either as far as I know, but I figured I could start with my family.

Anyone has a good resource for the pros and cons of each?

A perfect example of good software.

Enter email, enter password, welcome to federated encrypted chat messages. Simple.

Easy adaptation too. Invite a friend using either a friendly invite URL (referral link) or Qr Code, they enter their email address, and password, done.

This is easier to use than WhatsApp or Signal. It is called, Delta Chat, and it works with your own email.

I'm a Meta refugee. Trying to convince people to contact me via Signal, Element (Matrix) or just text/phone me, rather than use Messenger or WhatsApp is proving impossible. Should I just ditch my friends and family and start again?! #Meta #Signal #WhatsApp #Facebook #Messenger #Element

I know why people do not switch to the Fediverse, or why they do not switch to secure messaging services, outside the reach of corporate and government oversight.

It is more convenient not to do so.

A lot of these free, open source developments, target geeks. Congratulation, if you're reading this, you likely have already put in more effort that it takes to sign up and use something else.

NO - Never - Get the idea out of your head, people will not give up convenience for better privacy. It is not in human nature and 30+ years of corporate and government oversight, should make that obvious. If it is not convenience, it does not matter how private and secure something is. Sorry, not sorry, those are just the facts. It is a hard pill to swallow, but swallow you must, so people can start focusing on making these many things, convenient.

I sometimes, although I cannot prove it, believe some of the developments behind better privacy and security, intentionally keep things hard, by design. That perhaps the FOSS world was infiltrated years ago, and that is why there has always been the pushback, on making things idiot-proof, graphically please, and simpler.

Mastodon and Misskey, for example, both use Activity Pub, but I should not need to copy and paste someone's username and manually search for them, to follow. It took years, for Mastodon, to make it easy for me to just stumble over a profile, and click a single button to follow.

If it is not simple, and easy, you're wasting everyone's time. Go code something else.

I am sort of late to the game but ... anything I should know about before I install the "Signal Desktop App" on my Debian box? Is their stuff "skeevy" in any way? Does it want elevated privileges?
