Ollantaytambo, Peru 2017 "A chullo (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈtʃuʎo], from Quechua: ch'ullu; known as lluch'u in Aymara) is an Andean style of hat with earflaps, made from vicuña, alpaca, llama or sheep's wool. Alpaca fleece has wool-like qualities that help to insulate chullo-wearers from the harsh conditions in the Andean mountain region. Chullos often have ear-flaps that can be tied under the chin, to further warm the wearer's head. Hats have been worn in the Andean mountain region by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Wearing different types and colors has a significance among certain Andean natives. According to Peruvian historian Arturo Jiménez Borja, the chullo has its origins in the cultural exchange between Spaniards, who incorporated elements of their birretes and the original hat of the Andeans. fiona and marcWe spent a full two months in the small but vibrant town of Urubamba, right in the middle of the valley that is not wrongly called the "Sacred Valley." ✨ We felt at home very quickly, as the relaxed and very friendly manner of the locals and the expats who had adapted to the laid-back life, as well as the relatively few tourists, all contributed positively to this pleasant atmosphere. fiona and marcAfter a flight with one stopover in Santiago de Chile, we landed in Cusco (Peru) in the evening. Cusco, the former Inca capital, welcomed us with heavy rain... Luckily, we were picked up by a taxi driver, and could watch the mud streams flowing past us in the roadside ditch from the dry. The taxi driver just laughed at our amazement. 'The rainy season in Peru has just begun, and there will be even more severe rainfall,' he told us. Finally finally, late in the evening, we arrived at our destination, our small bungalow on the outskirts of Urubamba.
