Really enjoying this video essay "Goth Is White: Pallor, Prejudice and Purity" that someone #onHere shared. It is very long but worth checking out. I've been discussing a ton with my friends in recent years about how punk is overwhelmingly white and how punk BIPOC folx are pushed away from the narratives of the scene that they built.
Goth as an alternative culture shares many of those parallels. The video covers topics including:
- the relation between white pallor skin as a goth aesthetic with classism and colorism
- the manner in which white privilege elevates Eurocentric narratives without cause in alternative spaces while simultaneously co-opting other cultures as aesthetics
- the subversive yet apolitical nature of goth, which can easily be construed into right-wing politic

I recommend it to white folx who consider themselves "alt" to check themselves and to BIPOC folx looking for affirmation.
