"Some MPs have told the BBC that potential changes to payments for disabled people would be "unacceptable" and they "wouldn't wear it". The detail of the plans will be unveiled next week by Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall, and the full scale of spending reductions unveiled by the chancellor the week after in the Spring Statement."

Chancellor Rachel Reeves speaks to reporters, wearing a scarlet open necked shirt, a navy suit jacket and a gold choker chain, with small gold hoop earrings.
BBC NewsReeves insists changes to welfare needed as MPs call for flexibilityLabour MPs have been expressing unease about the proposed cuts to welfare, ahead of announcements next week.

Apparently a Govt. 'source' has today suggested that Labour MPs making representations (complaining) about the prospective benefits freezes & cuts are (actually) just 'pearl clutching'

If true then this is both ageset & sexist if being used as an insult (its unclear how else it might be intended), and suggests Labour 'managers' have developed a tin ear for any political development outside the confines of the Westminster Village.

$42.5 Billion Broadband Grant Program Being Rewritten To Benefit Elon Musk
techdirt.com/2025/03/12/42-5-b

"there are $42.5 billion in broadband #grants... courtesy of the 2021 #infrastructure bill. The #GOP voted against the bill, but have repeatedly... taken credit for its looming #benefits among our broadly misinformed electorate. And, as we predicted, they’re now redrafting key components of the program to the direct benefit of #ElonMusk"

"As times have changed, successive British governments have become much less comfortable being explicitly discriminatory towards Disabled people. But the medical model is still viewed as common sense in the heart of Whitehall – as can be seen by Starmer’s plans – which allows politicians to feel comfortable seeing people’s value as dependent solely on their capacity to work."

"Labour’s proposed reforms appear to be based not just on budgeting, but a belief: paid work is a virtue (and people who don’t perform it deserve a worse life than everyone else)"
Frances Ryan, excellent as usual.

Dudek has repeatedly rebutted that claim. While a database of people who have had #SocialSecurity numbers is missing dates of death for millions of records, that doesn’t mean those people appear in a separate database of beneficiaries, he said.

Under #Trump, the agency is already undergoing a *reorganization*, w/snr staffers exiting, & job cuts & office reductions in the works—alarming Dems who see them as a threat to a #benefits program….

#ElonMusk’s #DOGE has sent 3 individuals w/experience in #PrivateEquity & #finance to the #SocialSecurity Admin, highlighting the focus that #Trump is putting on *rooting out waste & fraud in the nation’s social insurance programs* [dismantling & privatizing the system].

These b@stards are cutting £6bn from the poorest and most vulnerable in society. If they want to find the money, simply create it and cancel the debt by taxing those who avoid their legal responsibilities.
I've just protested to my MP.

Starmer braces for rebellion over welfare cuts as Labour accused of ‘pushing disabled people into poverty’
msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/star

I find it weird that the UK calls it " #benefits " and not " #welfare ", especially when even the #USA calls it welfare...

Maybe I'm overthinking it but: I hate the sentiment of "benefits". Its giving: "oh, you're BENEFITING from MY tax money so you can live as a disabled person, YOURE WELCOME", rather than what welfare says: "You need this money for your *welfare*, this is to support you to live a life that caters to your needs"

An unnamed 'senior' Labour backbencher (quoted in the Guardian) on the prospective cuts to welfare, echos concerns expressed here (and elsewhere):

'We are a rich country but we have lots of poorer people. Do not target stuff at the poorest and most vulnerable. There are others ways of doing it'!

Well there may be other ways but Rachel Reeves seems unwilling to countenance them....
