Apparently a Govt. 'source' has today suggested that Labour MPs making representations (complaining) about the prospective benefits freezes & cuts are (actually) just 'pearl clutching'

If true then this is both ageset & sexist if being used as an insult (its unclear how else it might be intended), and suggests Labour 'managers' have developed a tin ear for any political development outside the confines of the Westminster Village.

The GOP voted against the bill, but have repeatedly... taken credit for its looming benefits among our broadly misinformed electorate... they’re now redrafting key components of the program to the direct benefit of Elon Musk. To ensure that the $42.5 billion taxpayer money was spent wisely, the bill included numerous provisions, including a recommendation that states try to prioritize the funding of fiber. Because higher capacity fiber is generally future proof, whereas satellite services like Starlink are congested, expensive, harm the environment, and are seeing slowdowns as the network’s customer base grows. The NTIA also included some bare bones requirements that ISPs taking taxpayer money try to ensure that any resulting service is made affordable to poor people. Big ISPs like Comcast and AT&T were quick to complain last year... the outrageous scandal that is trying to help poor people get online. These fairly sensible restrictions (which I suspect would have never been enforced in any serious way anyway) are being declared “woke” by the Trump administration, which is changing key parts of the grant program to the direct benefit of Elon Musk:

Dudek has repeatedly rebutted that claim. While a database of people who have had #SocialSecurity numbers is missing dates of death for millions of records, that doesn’t mean those people appear in a separate database of beneficiaries, he said.

Under #Trump, the agency is already undergoing a *reorganization*, w/snr staffers exiting, & job cuts & office reductions in the works—alarming Dems who see them as a threat to a #benefits program….

I find it weird that the UK calls it " #benefits " and not " #welfare ", especially when even the #USA calls it welfare...

Maybe I'm overthinking it but: I hate the sentiment of "benefits". Its giving: "oh, you're BENEFITING from MY tax money so you can live as a disabled person, YOURE WELCOME", rather than what welfare says: "You need this money for your *welfare*, this is to support you to live a life that caters to your needs"

'We are a rich country but we have lots of poorer people. Do not target stuff at the poorest and most vulnerable. There are others ways of doing it'!

Well there may be other ways but Rachel Reeves seems unwilling to countenance them....
