New blogpost: "DRM: Digital Restrictions Management Damages Reading Magic"

There was an interesting discussion on the fediverse last night about DRM (digital restrictions management, a form of copy protection designed to limit how you can read the books you buy) and ebooks.

My thoughts about DRM, paying authors, and how, while I very much dislike DRM on the books I want to buy, I can see why an author might be concerned about someone asking how to buy their books without it.

How the Kindle Lost China

Tbh the idea that one is locked in to buying from one store doesn't compute to the Asian mind. We like options. We like the ability to leave and buy from others. So I am not surprised it didn't take off in China, where ebook readers have a more unwalled garden approach, and you can customize it as much as you can.

Recently I broke my Boox Leaf 2 🥲. I was very tempted to buy a Kobo because it was so well built and we'll designed, but I settled with a Boox Go 6 instead because I want the freedom to access multiple stores. It's definitely not as pretty but is 40% cheaper than the Kobo Libra.

So my Go reader now has a library eith DRM free ebooks, Amazon and Google Books. I also have Pleco, which enables me to read Chinese ebooks with ease. I won't sacrifice this freedom, sorry.

#SixthTone · How the Kindle Lost ChinaThe popular e-reader seemed poised to dominate the Chinese market, but mounting competition and a decade of questionable business decisions ultimately spelled its doom.

Just ordered a Kobo Libra Colour so now the only money I’m paying that asshole Bezos is for a couple of S3 buckets that I haven’t had time to move off of AWS.

Very much looking forward to the time when his fascist collaborator ass doesn’t get a single euro cent from me.

(Another plus: Kobo works with Overdrive and I checked and Dublin libraries support it so you should be able to check out library books directly on the device. And I’m quite looking forward to a little bit of colour and the notetaking features.)

I use an Onyx Boox. It's just an Android tablet with an e-paper display. But... Maybe you own a Kindle and can't afford a new device. Jailbreak it and run KOReader!
It's eaier than you think!

If you have an Android phone, you can even try out the KOreader app to see how you like it before yku go jailbreaking. KOreader.rocks
Just remember, LCD/OLED isn't the best experience for KOReader.
