The buses on Big Island are "free" for passengers. ( More on this later. )Pretty soon, a bus driver developed a distinct dislike for me. I was talking in Hindi over the phone once, and he cursed me out badly for that. Other people do talk on their phones.Thus, began his campaign of hatred and prejudice. This guy would chew me out every chance he got. He would not let me open the bay doors, to put my luggage in, even though other passengers do it on the bus system throughout the island.So I would just smile politely, and ask him to open the bay doors every time. He soon realized that I was not a tourist who was going away soon, but a frequent passenger on his bus. And now, he would have to get off the bus every time, to open the doors just for me, which he did with a lot of cussing, grumbling, fuming, and eye-rolling. My attempts at politeness only made it worse for him.Once, I noticed a fragile Chinese porcelain vase in the cargo bay, which someone had left behind. I tried to point this out to him, to have him keep it safe and return it to the lost&found of the bus system. He was angry, and told me to put it back where I had found it.Conversations with this guy never go anywhere, since he yells loudly, and doesn't let me get a word in edgewise.In the meanwhile, bus drivers were denying my rides on the bus system, probably because I had started writing about the bad bus system:<a href="https://paper.wf/penumbrage/improving-hawaiis-bus-system" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank">https://paper.wf/penumbrage/improving-hawaiis-bus-system</a>I started asking other drivers if it was a rule that the only the bus driver could open the cargo bay doors. They said no, and would not step out of the bus to open the bay door.I asked this driver again, to clarify the rules. He yelled at me, and tried to throw me off the bus. When I refused to give up my seat, he said he would drive the bus to the police station. When I refused to get out of the bus, he drove to the police station, talked to the cops, threatened me some more, thrust a camera in my face and took a picture, and then backed off.I have been kicked off a bus, in the middle of a journey, in the middle of nowhere. Last week, he wanted to throw me off the bus, for no reason. When I refused to get off, he drove the bus to the police station. Johnny D: ( moved to @purrperl@mastodon.social )Last evening, I took Bus number 90, from Kona to Na'alehu, around 3pm.At the Luhia Street stop in Kona, I was waiting for an older man to get on, who was ahead in the line for the bus. He had some belongings he was struggling with. The driver was about to close the bus door, without giving this senior citizen the time to get on. That would also mean leaving me off the bus.I politely stopped the bus driver, and helped the older man board, carrying his umbrella for him.As we approached Na'alehu Civic Center, a designated stop, I called out to the driver, "Stop, please." Three times, from around 300 feet before the designated stop, till 0 feet away.The driver did not heed me, but kept driving on at maximum speed, ignoring the stop. I shouted, "Stop the bus, please. Stop the bus!"At this point, the driver yelled, "You can get off at the next stop." When we got to the next stop, he came to the passenger aisle, yelling, "Who did that?"I stepped up, and said, "It was I." The driver went irate. Telling me to get off the bus. He said, "I remember you. From here on, I will not let you on my bus."I calmly pointed out that it was not his personal bus, and he did not make the rules about who could ride, at will.He said, "I feel threatened by you."The driver pulled out his camera, and started recording me.At this point, the older man, who had climbed out of the bus, climbed back in, saying he had forgotten his cane.As I was standing outside, by the bus door, to help this old man, the driver tried to close the door on me, yelling, "You are blocking the door."This is not even close to the first time I have had a nasty experience with the Roberts Heleon Bus System.In fact, I have written about the bus system in Hawai'i.<a href="https://paper.wf/penumbrage/improving-hawaiis-bus-system" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank">https://paper.wf/penumbrage/improving-hawaiis-bus-system</a> The driver: - ignored a designated stop. - ignored my calls to stop at the designated stop. - harassed me, and tried to impose his frontier justice on me. - claimed to be threatened by a passenger yelling, "Stop the bus!"This is not an isolated incident. I have many more abuses to report here, no just of myself, but of many people trying to ride the bus.Where is the accountability?
