If it were true that they only used storm-broken plants at first, then I really like that and will follow this school from now on. :)

Wild chrysanthemums began growing on the smaller of Ōsawa Pond's islets shortly after its creation, leading to the name 'Chrysanthemum Island'.
Saga-giku (嵯峨菊), now known as 1 of Japan's "3 Great Chrysanthemums", inspired the creation of Daikaku-ji's school of ikebana.
At the pond's north end are 2 islands: larger Tenjin-jima (天神島) and smaller Kiku-jima (菊島), with small rocky islets representing junks at anchor.
The wild chrysanthemums growing on Kiku-jima would lead to the development of Saga Go-ryū (嵯峨御流) school of flower arrangement.

"The flowers [chabana] should be such as they are in the moor."
-The first rule from Sen-no-Rikyū's (千利休 1522-91) "Rikyū shichisoku" (利休七則 "Rikyū's Seven Precepts").
So what is the difference between chabana (茶花), flowers for the tearoom, and ikebana (生け花)?
The photos below show chabana.
Unlike the more stylised ikebana, as a general rule flowers for the tearoom appear more naturalistic, bringing the world outside into the alcove.
"Not only beautiful flowers but also buds and withered flowers have life, and each has its own beauty. By arranging flowers with reverence, one refines oneself.”

Ikenobō (池坊) is the oldest and largest school of ikebana, founded right here in Kyōto in the 15thC by the Buddhist monk Sennō Kuden (池坊専応口伝).
Sennō lived at Rokkaku-dō (六角堂) and named his school after the monks' quarters that stood beside the temple pond.
Ikebana (生け花) is the Japanese art of flower arranging, literally 'bringing flowers to life'. Beginning as Buddhist floral offerings, over time flower arrangement grew into an artistic pursuit. Nowadays there are over 1000 schools of Ikebana all over the world.

Today I want to delve into the world of ikebana and show off some of Murakami-san's extraordinary work.
