Hans on the Bike<p>This is a bidirectional <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/bicycle" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bicycle</span></a> path that goes underneath one arm of a roundabout to avoid conflict between peds, cyclists and cars. Why not a bridge, you may ask. A downwards slope creates momentum that you can use to go up at the other end. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/ottbike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottbike</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Ottawa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ottawa</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/bike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bike</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/cycling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cycling</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/BikeTooter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BikeTooter</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Netherlands" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Netherlands</span></a></p>

Hans on the Bike<p>My guess the pathway behind Parliament Hill will be closed for many months to come, it was supposed to open in fall 2024 then spring 2025 <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/ottbike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottbike</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/ottawa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottawa</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/biketooter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biketooter</span></a></p>

This is a TRAP. Churchill underpass is closed 👎 and you get dumped onto the parkway at Westboro Beach 👎 and need to go down the grassy hill to get back on the pathway 👎</p><p>-The pathway hill is still not great, but I could get up it.</p><p>-Largely clear from Westboro Beach to New Orchard. Some detours on to the grass, but I didn't need to dismount from my hybrid.</p><p>-Roadies are out and they were struggling with the remaining ice and snow. Hybrid riders seemed to fare much better.</p><p>My route downtown, until the Churchill Underpass opens, will be Scott to Carleton, and go under the parkway there.</p><p>The pathway within the fenced off area is also built. Just open it, you cowards, so we can ride away from cars.</p><p>(Edit to add: I was on a summer bike. No studs, full air.)</p>

JustG<p>Oh you want to figure out how to bike or walk to get a weeks worth of groceries? $400 seems like a lot until you’re not paying $200 a month on car insurance and this will last you for 10 yrs. We bought a Thule Chariot pre-COVID for like $800 and put thousands of kms on it for transit, fun, groceries, going to the museum, living life and sold it after 5 years with one replaced front wheel. People need to see the options <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ottawa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottawa</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/onpoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>onpoli</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ottbike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottbike</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ontario" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ontario</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://burley.com/en-ca/collections/bike-cargo-trailers/products/travoy" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">burley.com/en-ca/collections/b</span><span class="invisible">ike-cargo-trailers/products/travoy</span></a></p>
JustG<p>Cities need to plan bike shops into their urban planning like car rental locations and car-share companies. Bike shops should become community-focused transit hubs. Hubs for products, hubs for repair support, hubs for information and expertise focused on living without a car. Sure folks are gunna want their $13,000 downhill e-bikes and carbon road riders. But there’s huge potential for bike shops to shift their business models and offerings <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ottbike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottbike</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/biketooter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biketooter</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>canada</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/cdnpoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cdnpoli</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ontario" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ontario</span></a></p>
JustG<p>I’ve been thinking on this for a long time and given what is going to happen to the bike industry in the <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/usa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>usa</span></a> there needs to be a grassroots reimagining of the bike industry. Canada needs to onshore regular and cargo bike manufacturing. The bike industry is collectively on aggregate focused on sport, selling new models like their iPhones. The bike industry needs to become part of the “transportation” industry <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ottawa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottawa</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ottbike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottbike</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/biketooter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biketooter</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/cdnpoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cdnpoli</span></a></p>

Some iffy spots if on a standard bike, especially near LRT construction, but most areas with snow have clear paths if you zig zag.</p><p>-Down hill to the beach underpass remains terrifying.</p><p>-Churchill underpass is still flooded and now also blocked off to boot.</p><p>-Tomorrow and Friday will help clear the snow, but not the Churchill underpass. Too bad that brand new infrastructure was built to flood 👎👎👎</p>

Hans on the Bike<p>Road vs path conditions yesterday afternoon in <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Ottawa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ottawa</span></a>. Does the City value active transportation or is it lip service ‘when the budget allows it’? The pathway to the mall is impassable. Pathways are important shortcuts and safe ways to get to places and bus stops for those who don’t own cars. Note in the last picture, you can see the mall actually ploughs to the end of their property. <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/ottbike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottbike</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/ottwalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottwalk</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/biketooter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biketooter</span></a></p>
