A Western Bluebird that I saw at Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge today.

A blue bird with a rust colored patch on its back is in flight, its wings pointed downward.

The same bird is now perched on a bare branch. Its chest is rust colored on top and grey below. Its head is turned, showing its pointy beak.

The blue wings of a small bird beat so quickly they blur like water in a fast river, but the birds shiny black eye is sharp and focused and its rust-colored breast reveals fine feather detail like a woven rug. The bluebird is just lifting off from a perch in an evergreen tree, of which only faint details can be discerned.
