Battery Point Lighthouse II

Battery Point Lighthouse sits on a small point at the southwest end of Crescent City in Del Norte County in Northern California. Between the small point and Crescent City is a small strip of land that depending on the height of the tide and time of day may or may not be passable. In my case, one foot was soaked from a misstep on the way back in.

Battery Point Lighthouse II This is an image of the Battery Point Lighthouse located in Crescent City, California. I was part way down the hill in between the lighthouse and the ocean when I captured this image. The immediate foreground are some ice plants that grow around the lighthouse. Above the ice plants is a large water storage tank made of wood and painted white with steel straps holding it together. Directly above the water tower is the light. The lighthouse is painted white with green trim. The roof is red shingles. There is a coastal cypress tree behind the lighthouse and the sky is clear and deep blue.

Golden Gate Bridge Portrait

This image of the Golden Gate Bridge was captured on a foggy summer day.
When we started out across the bridge it was sunny and fairly warm.
At midspan the fog started rolling in. By the time we had reached the north tower the fog had engulfed most of the bridge. Looking south the fog is so thick that the bridge seemed to disappear into the fog.

Golden Gate Bridge Portrait This is a black and white image of the Golden Gate Bridge spanning the San Francisco Bay. This was captured from the walkway that goes around the north tower of the bridge. The view is looking south towards the city. I was able to reach out over the bridge to get this angle. The bridge enters the image from the lower right corner and works across over to the left center of the image. You can clearly see the steel girders under the bridge and the cables that hold the bridge deck in place. The fog is so thick that all details disappear into the fog.

Golden Gate in the Fog II

On this day I took a walk down at the east end of Christy Fields. As we made our way towards the Golden Gate Bridge fog started creeping in, at times, completely hiding the bridge. Depending on the wind we could see it or not for a few minutes here and there. The sun lit the bridge up wonderfully above the fog.

Golden Gate in the Fog II This is an image of the Golden Gate Bridge captured from Crissy Fields along the San Francisco Bay. The waters of the bay make up the foreground of the image. There is a wharf in the foreground that has a white storage building that has a roof that is basically the same color as the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. Behind the wharf and the storage building is a low bank of fog that hides everything between the wharf and the upper reaches of the bridge. Above the fog you can see the south tower of the bridge from about the halfway point up the tower. The main cables all drop down into the fog. Above the tower is a beautiful blue summer sky.

Golden Gate Bridge and Ft Baker

After getting fogged in at the top of the Golden Gate Bridge we took the elevator back down to the deck and this small clearing appeared.
This image captures the beauty of the Marin County the waterfront below. Below is the San Francisco Bay and then a little deeper into the background is Horseshoe Bay. Then behind Horseshoe Bay is Ft. Baker.

Directly below the bridge you can see a service road that leads out to a lighthouse below the bridge. Next to the service road is the beautiful blue waters of the San Francisco Bay. The bay runs up along the right side of the image. In the center of the image is Horseshoe Bay and Ft. Baker. You can see the Marin Headlands in the background. The sky is almost covered in low clouds and fog except for a somewhat circular opening above Ft Baker showing a beautiful blue sky.

Golden Gate and The City

I captured this image of San Francisco and the Golden Gate bridge on a cool winter day with a small storm clearing and blowing past the city.
This was captured from a location known as Hawk Hill in the Marin Headlands. Hawk Hill allows one of the highest vantage points of the bridge and the city.

Golden Gate and The City This is an imaging the bridge and San Francisco. The foreground is the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. There is a large tanker ship heading in towards the San Francisco Bay just about to pass under the Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is seen spanning the Golden Gate from the Marin Headlands to San Francisco. Beyond the bridge is the San Francisco Bay and the city of San Francisco in the center right of the image. Behind all of this are some large puffy clouds from a clearing storm blowing east.

Golden Gate Bridge and Ft Point

There's something about being around the Golden Gate Bridge. It's placement between hills on both sides of the San Francisco Bay leave scenic views from most any angles. The pacific Ocean on one side and the San Francisco Bay on the other is just full of natural beauty.
Framed by an old rusty chain to give the image a different perspective.

Golden Gate Bridge and Ft Point This is an image of the Golden Gate Bridge and Ft. Point taken from the edge of the San Francisco Ba. I framed the foreground with the old rusty chain that marked the boundary of the parking lot. As you follow the chain down the left side of the image it brings you around to Ft. Point. This is a large old military fort that was built to protect the opening of the bay. The bridge comes in from the upper left over Ft Point and then moves toward the center as it makes it's way across the opening of San Francisco Bay.

Bridge to Obscurity

Captured on a mid-summer day in San Francisco.
The Golden Gate Bridge so often stands tall on a clear. During the summer when there is a conversion layer in the area and the fog comes in off of the coast and blots out the summer sky,
That is what happened here as we made our way across the bridge the fog came in and turned the scene into a dreamlike foggy funk.

Bridge To Obscurity This is an image of the Golden Gate Bridge as it was getting socked in with a wall of fog coming in off the ocean on a mid-summer day. I reached out over the railing that goes around the north tower and took an image looking south. The bridge reaches from the bottom right corner of the image and works past the center towards the top left as the fog consumes the bridge as it disappears from sight.

Sunflowers At Sundown

The sunflowers grow fast here in California and they are ready to harvest mid summer.
I captured this image outside of the city of Davis. This field has become a magnet for sunflower gawkers. There is a frontage road along the freeway and for weeks on end cars are parked on the shoulder up and down the road. I hope you enjoy this little slice of the Central Valley.

Sunflowers At Sundown Captured off of Highway 80 between Davis and Dixon California. This is a field of sunflowers close to harvest time. The field in view is many, many acres of sunflowers extending in both directions beyond the frame of the image. The field ends at the tree line maybe a couple of hundred yards back into the image. Beyond the tree line are the Vaca Hills and beyond that are the brilliant colors of the sun that just fell below the horizon. The yellow in the sky matches the large blooms of the sunflowers.

Sonoma Valley Creek

I was hiking the Sonoma Valley State Park in late winter/early spring after some pretty good rains.
This creek dries up by mid summer. I was lucky to come up to this park when I did as this little jewel was running fairly strong. The green hills and the moss covered rocks on the banks set this up nicely and I really enjoyed just sitting on the banks listening to nature.

Sonoma Valley Creek I found this beautiful little seasonal stream in Sonoma Valley State Park located between the cities of Sonoma and Santa Rosa. The foreground center of the image is the water of the stream after it dropped through a small cascade. The stream is lined with moss covered rocks on both banks. The water drops down in the middle of the frame as it cascades over rocks and boulders. Using a slow shutter I was able to feather the water out to give it a soft silky look. The background of the image shows the lush green forest that makes up a good portion of the park,

Joe's Barber Shop

Some barber shops seem to be the center of town. Joe's is actually much newer than many of the barber shops I see in small towns. But this is very fitting for the feel that I was trying to get.
The red, white, and blue barber pole on the outside, the red leather chairs on the inside, old bottles of elixirs and what not set up on the shelf. This is my kind of place.

Joe's Barber Shop This is an image of Joe's Barber shop located in downtown Vacaville, Ca. I was looking for a nostalgic look as walked through town that night. I think this fit well and I added some selective coloring to get the mood I was looking for. The foreground has a city bench facing the front of the barber shop. The exterior of the shop looks like it was built in the late 50's or maybe the early 60's. The front is made of a beige colored stucco look with big windows that let us look in to the old style shop. Below the windows are a couple of red panels. Inside the shop you can see everything you would think you would find in an old shop.

Mix Canyon Creek

This is a small waterfall half way up Mix Canyon off of Pleasant Valley Road in Solano County. Not an easy shot to get as there are very few places to set up along a narrow dirt road.
This was the first images I ever entered into a photography contest. This image took first place in the color landscape category. Came in second for best of show.

Mix Canyon Creek This is an image of a creek up in Mix Canyon up in the hills that border Vacaville on the west. This seasonal waterfall flows fairly strong in the winter and spring. It tapers off as the summer sets in and the rains stop. At the top of the image there is a broken oak tree with a large limb reaching over the creek. The water flows down below the oak and over several large rocks and into a couple of small pools. The land on both sides of the creek is very rugged with large rocks and boulders mixed in with some trees and bushes struggling to hang on to the steep landscape. I used a slow shutter on this image to give the water a nice silky look.

Theatre DeVille

The Theatre DeVille is a nightclub in Vacaville, California. The venue went through a major renovation where the new owners sunk a large amount of money into a state of the art sound system.
The building located has been occupied by a number of tenants including a theatre and a church just to name a few. The renovation to it's new form took a good part of a year.

Theatre DeVille Captured in downtown Vacaville, California, this is the Theatre DeVille. Remodeled in a art deco style the building stands out proudly on Main Street. The bottom of the image is the marquee of the building. The name of the theatre sits prominently front center of the marquee. The building is painted in various shades of gray and black. The sign has been given a slight yellowish tint to give it an aged look. On top of the marquee is a large replica of an old antique style microphone. There are three windows, one of which is blocked by the microphone. The windows are tall and narrow with an arch at the top.

Orange Door

Recently I was on a class trip out to Locke California on the Sacramento River Delta. The goal was to emulate a couple of old time photographers, William Quisenberry and Walker Evans. Quisenberry emulated Walker Evans for many years and the style was to shoot very one dimensional paying more attention to detail and textures.
I found this building a few miles down the road.

Orange Door This is an image that I shot in the process of trying to emulate a couple of classic photographers, William Quisenberry and Walker Evans. Both are known to shoot images that are pretty much two dimensional without much depth. This is the back of an old building found out in the Sacramento River Delta in the town of Locke. The siding on the building is all corrugated steel, some of the pieces are showing different levels of rust giving it a very industrial look. There are some odds and ends on the ground like a hose and an old planter along with various other items. What caught my eye on this image is the reddish/orange door in the lower left hand corner.

Rockville Reflections

Rockville Regional Park is one of my regular hiking destinations near home.
The park has a range of trails from easy to difficult.
Near the end of summer this little pond can dry up into basically large mud puddle. I captured this on a beautiful spring day where the wind was completely absent. The pond reflected as almost a perfect mirror.

Rockville Reflection This image was captured at Rockville Regional Park just outside of Fairfield, Ca. This is a square format image. The foreground is of a seasonal pond. There is absolutely no wind when I captured this image and the pond is completely still creating a mirror effect, reflecting everything without a ripple. On the right edge of the image the top part of the pond comes into view. This follows around to the left side of the image. Beyond the pond the grass is growing a brilliant green as the area has had plenty of rain. Onn the right is a large oak tree that towers a good 10 feet above all the others. This tree as well as others reflect into the pond as does the sky with wispy clouds covering.

Dixon Grain Elevator

Grain elevators to me are like old boats. They seem to develop their own unique look and character as they age and I don't think any two are the same.
So I purchased a new lens for my camera and I wanted to give a try. This grain elevator is roughly 20 miles from my home and I always wanted to explore the area and the elevator itself.

Dixon Grain Elevator This is an image of a Grain Elevator located in Dixon California. Grain elevators to me are a lot like boats. They seem to have their own style and character. This one has some kind of warehouse or office located on top of the large cylindrical towers. There are other buildings in the background and the foreground is an empty parking lot. The sun is just starting to breach the horizon off to the right of the image creating a nice warm pinkish glow.

Bodie Mercantile

Bodie California is located in the Eastern Sierras and is the official ghost town of California. It is listed as a State Historical Park, earning that designation in 1962 when the state took over.
During the Gold Rush days, Bodie was a bustling small city of between 7 and 10 thousand residents. Multiple events including a couple of fires spelt the end of Bodie.

Bodie Mercantile Captured at the Bodie State Historic Park. This is an image, a look into the past, of the interior of the Bodie Mercantile. This image is basically a time stamp of the early 1930's. After easy gold was gone, the Bodie Railroad shut down and then with 2 major fires destroyed most of the town, things shut down. Inside this shop are old fashion, wooden telephone on the far wall. The old cash register sits on the counter. Behind the counter there are still a number of canned goods, bottles, and tins holding various items. All of these items are covered with nearly 100 years of dust.

Last Light Lake Tahoe

It's pretty amazing how fast the sun drops in the sky when your in the mountains. One minute I was relaxing with my wife, we were commenting on a wedding that was taking place down the beach away. By the time I noticed that the sun was setting I had to rush to get my gear together and set up on this dock in South Lake.

Last Light Lake Tahoe Last Light Lake Tahoe is an image I captured while visiting Lake Tahoe. In the foreground is a dock that runs out towards right edge of the image. The lake color changes from a dark blue to a reddish/orange color. The silhouette of the mountains split the lake and the sky. The sky is a brilliant yellow at the horizon that fades to orange and then blue. Out on the lake there are some boats moored out at their buoys.

Frosty

This image was captured right after a decent snow storm came through Yosemite Valley.
This beautiful snow covered tree stood out against the muted evergreens behind them.
The snow was unbroken and presents a beautiful white carpet leading back to the tree.
The oak, with it's broad branches seemed to have captured more snow than those around it.

Frosty This is an image of a snow-covered oak tree captured in Yosemite Valley just after a winter storm moved through the valley. The foreground of the image is a white carpet of undisturbed snow. The oak tree "Frosty" is framed on the left by the branches of another oak. The right side of Frosty is framed by some taller Douglas Fir pine trees. Snow pretty much covers everything but the colors of the tree fight to break through. You can see a nice green under the branches of the pine trees. If you look at "Frosty" you can see hints of brown on the branches and trunk.

Solitaire

This was captured in February during the middle of winter.
Camped in Yosemite Valley a snow storm moved through the valley dumping about 8 inches of snow.
As I made my way through the village in the morning I saw this fabulous snow covered oak tree and decided it would make a good subject for a photo. It's not really solitaire but it did stand out from al the other trees around.

Solitaire I captured this magnificent snow covered oak tree after a winter storm moved through Yosemite Valley overnight. The foreground of the image is an unbroken field of snow, pure as can be. The large oak tree is framed on both sides by a few smaller snow covered trees. The large oak towers over the other trees in the area. The branches are heavy with snow. The sky in the background is gray and overcast. This is a color image but the snow and low clouds give it an appearance of being a black and white image unless looked at closely you can see some color in the trunks of the trees.

Three Brothers and Bridalveil
One of my favorite vistas in Yosemite Valley is the tunnel view. Especially on days like the day I captured this image. We had camped in the valley the previous night and it snowed most of the night.
This image shows the magic of winter in Yosemite Valley with Bridalveil Falls flowing in the trough of the valley of the Three Brothers.

Three Brothers and Bridalveil Winter in Yosemite Valley often brings out some stunning views. This is an image of the Three Brothers rock formation in Yosemite Valley. This was captured as a snowstorm was clearing after an overnight storm. The foreground consist of snow covered pine trees, mostly Douglass Fir trees. The branches are all weighed down by the heavy, wet snow. The Three Brothers rise above the tree line. Snow is covering everything at the higher elevation. There are a couple clouds in the background and one is slightly covering one of the peaks. Behind the clouds is a brilliant blue sky.
