@gerowen Does your mum need to print &/or scan? If no, then either of the Mints will likely be great for her, but if yes, then make sure you do test ahead of time for Mint's HW compatibility. Over the past few months i've been doing a similar exercise for the same reason, for my dad, & Mint was the first option i tried for him [by creating a VM in his win10 pc, so we could test his HW]. To my shock it proved incompatible with his printer, so then i tried Fedora KDE, which so far is looking like the way we'll go... unless he ends up chickening out & instead chooses to stay with the hideous micro$oft via upgrade to the loathsome win11. Good luck.

The two #FOSS #scanner apps i'd installed in his KFedora VM are #Skanlite & #SimpleScan. This morning i found another possibility for him, & have emailed about it to him, asking if he'd like me to also install it for him to evaluate; #VueScan flathub.org/en-GB/apps/com.ham . I wrote the email with heavy heart, & kinda sorta hope he declines the offer, coz this is #Proprietary, not #FOSS, which i always prefer to eschew.

From infosec.space/@MsDropbear42/11, five days ago :

I've shown them to dad, & asked him to play around with them over the weekend to familiarise himself with them, & hopefully satisfy himself that they will suffice

An hour ago i rang him for a quick update. He's continued to diligently work away each day in the temporary KFedora VM, practising with OnlyOffice, Spectacle [for screenshots then manipulations], & his printer + scanner. He still sounds cautiously pleased & hopeful that this penguin caper could be a goer to replace his dying win10.

I am thus cautiously inclined to prospectively indulge in a wee 🎉 🥳 👯‍♀️

🤞 🤞 🤞

The latest...

Am gonna remote-into dad's win10 pooter Mon arvo, & create two VMs in it:

  1. a #Fedora #KDE #Linux one, to test his printer & scanner compatibility
  2. a win11 one 😮, so we can both begin to get a first-hand feel for what it's like

If Test1 fails, i will have to finally accept that dad's never gonna become another #Penguinista, coz ongoing use of his printer & scanner is absolutely non-negotiable; he uses these HEAPS of the time every week, & whilst i don't care about printing & scanning at all, to dad these are absolute showstopper issues. I feel a sense of gathering gloom... 😨

The corollary ofc is that if Test1 fails, the only remaining option is to proceed with accepting win10's persistent nagging finally, & do the upgrade to win11, with all the horrors that entails. 😱

I feel dirty already, sigh.

Me be trying, hoping, wishing, to persuade dad to let me finally convert his win10 pc to Linux [+ a permanently offline win10 VM for his proprietary pgms that ofc do not run in Linux, & for which he won't or can't let me convert him to FOSS equivalents], instead of doing the feared upgrade to win11, sometime in the coming months. 🤞 🤞 🤞

I've not had time yet to read all these, but so many of the links here seem to portray win11 as total tripe & hideous horror... which IMO would be some achievement given i loathed win10 from the start, so if 11 is actually even worse than 10, then... OMZ 😱
