In light of #Plex raising their prices I was just curiously looking at different options for live #TV to see how the pricing compares. Loading up the #Pluto.tv website triggers rate limiting in my PiHole because it hammers it with at least 1,000 DNS requests almost instantly. I can change the limit setting easily enough, but wtf is the Pluto website doing?

Plex Pass annuncia aumento prezzi dal 29 aprile 📈 Abbonamento mensile sale a $6.99, annuale a $69.99. Streaming remoto ora disponibile solo con Plex Pass o acquisto del nuovo Remote Watch Pass ($1.99/mese). Nuove risorse per migliorare l’esperienza utente. #Plex #Streaming #TechNews

As someone who has owned a Plex Lifetime pass forever, this truly pisses me off that they want to charge me to stream my content remotely from my own server. Guess it's the perfect time to switch to JellyFin. I'm in the process of migrating my media anyway, what's one more container?

PCWorld · Plex's lifetime subscription plan is getting a massive price hikeBy Ben Patterson

Dude, what the fuck is #Plex up to now?

- An increase in price for their monthly Plex Pass: doesn't matter to me, why would I pay for it in the first place, esp considering how people who do often complain that the things they're paying for don't always work.

- Removal of activation fee of their
#iOS and #Android apps on mobile (previously, already free elsewhere): good, reduces that slight friction for users from trying to using Plex.

- Remote playback on your own fuckin' server is no longer an option, without either a Plex Pass subscription or a (newly released) Remote Watch subscription: this... is stupid af.

All in all, we've been
pampered with Plex and its ease of use and beautiful UI for too long, it's about time we move (and improve) #FOSS alternatives like #Jellyfin instead.

Inferesting move from #plex

If you’re using my server: don’t worry, I have a lifetime pass (graciously funded by a load of my friends years ago).

But if you’re running a server of your own and don’t have a Plex Pass, now’s the time to get one. arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/0

All of this said: If you've been using #Plex for free up until now and still don't want to pay.... It's probably time to investigate #Jellyfin.

If you don't share your Plex with anyone, again, nothing really changes... Though it sounds like you may need to look into something like Tailscale when away from home, so Plex still sees itself as streaming "locally".

A lot of kneejerk #Plex outrage this morning. Welcome to the Internet.

Here are the changes starting April 29th:

The price for Plex Pass is going up to $7/mo, or $70/yr, or $250 lifetime.

As a server owner, Plex Pass will be required to share with others *for free*. Otherwise, friends & family will need to pay Plex $2/month or $20/yr to watch your server.

If you already have a lifetime Plex Pass, nothing changes (except the mobile apps are free now for your users).

What media server should I use?

All my DVD and CD rips are sat on a plain filesystem with an NFS share.

That's good enough for Kodi and VLC. But I keep seeing people talking about things like #Plex and #Jellyfin - so I'm looking at options.

Which should I go for? VOTE NOW!
