When artists imagine the future these days, it looks bleak and dark — and actually, fair enough. But for Boomers, it was colorful, shiny, and sometimes sexy — and that's at least partly down to the late Syd Mead, the concept artist who worked on "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," "Tron" and "Blade Runner," and also depicted futuristic vehicles and alien vistas, imbued with optimism rather than evil. Six years after his death, Mead has his first retrospective, Future Pastime. Read more about it in the Art Newspaper's story here, and see it in New York until May 21. Story may be paywalled.

going to write a proper introduction post!

hello, my name is neo. i'm a transmasc in my 20's. generally speaking i like machines that move people, amusement rides, shooter games, and various sci fi and sci fi-adjacent media. i'm in between jobs right now, but my background spans aerospace engineering, acting, teaching, and operating amusement rides.

i occasionally draw and shoot 35mm film! (even less often, i write mediocre fanfiction.)

i'm on the fence about talking about my mental issues on new social media pages but you might find me mentioning them down the line.

i'll put my interests in the tags. (hopefully that's considered helpful here, like mastodon, and not spammy like it is on some sites.) happy to be here!

So, TRON: Ares.

pros:
- NIN
- also, I loved Tron (1982) to bits *even when I watched it as a grownup*

cons:
- the premise seems idiotic
- light cycles turning off the trail? COME ON!
- no frisbee so far
- Jared fucking Leto

I don't know.

What with all the Tron news around at the moment I must (a) re-watch both of the old films and (b) I’m seriously considering renaming my home assistant Pi from HAL-9000 to MCP. Previously HAL-9000 after I’d automated the garage door - “open the pod bay door, HAL”, now thinking of what the MCP might do if it decides to disagree with me…
