I've used #Protonmail for years. I became interested in #Tutanota because #Proton left Mastodon, expecting everyone would be fine using #Reddit to get updated information. I will not and cannot move to Reddit. Not only will I not ever support Reddit by being part of it, but I have a lifetime ban at Reddit for mentioning Mastodon in one of their communities. Screw them! I hate them and their CEO! My email provider is important in my life. My email provider said goodbye. We can no longer talk. My email provider doesn't understand me.

BTW, I'm not convinced that the Proton CEO is full on MAGA based on his Ukrainian donations and his support of many liberal organizations and leaders. Thee's no evidence he ever directly supported any Republicans. Please, let's not go there.

Tutanota says they are staying on Mastodon. I feel closer to them. So, I decided to begin testing the waters with Tutanota.

My problem with Tutanota is, always was, the name. It took me 3 months to remember Tutanota because I don't speak Latin. To me, it was random letters. They changed it to #Tutamail, but this is still, for me, a problem. I have a quiet voice. At the doctor's office or on the phone with a rep, when they ask me for my email address and I say tutamail, what they will hear is "doodamail". Jerry has an email address, doo da, doo da. And Americans pronounce "T" as "D" (as in "I hate Zuck and Meda"), so the conversation would go like this: No, not "DOO DA mail", not "TUDAmail", not, "tootamail", not "tudormail", not "2Dmail"... That person will struggle to find a word, but there isn't one. It's just 4 random characters the person never saw together. I will just frustrate them.

The other problem is the pain of changing email addresses. If I used my own domain name from the start, and not used protonmail.com and pm.me, then I could just move the domain name. So, thinking ahead this time, to avoid the entire doo da thing, and make it easy to move again, I decided to pay $4.99 for the first year of ninja-email.com. And since custom domains are not available on the Tutamail free plan, I paid the 3 Euro/month for the Revolutionary plan. Not all that expensive for the fun and the learning.

I like ProtonDrive as a secure way to have Cloud storage. It's one current difference. But, PQDrive is on the way from Tutanota, so I'll have my cloud storage eventually.

I will miss not being able to use Thunderbird with Tutanota. But, I always felt that given all the problems with the bridge, Proton will eventually drop it. Tutanota's reason for not having one is that it leaves email unencrypted on the computer. However, my folders are on a Veracrypt encrypted drive, so I'm good with using the bridge.

I don't use the other Proton services. I'm ready to play!

One thing I have noticed in using #Tutanota is that I have difficulties handling links in email. I suspect that this is something that has something to do with them having no knowledge of the email content, but plain-text emails with URLs are not clickable. That wouldn't be a big deal, but I'm finding I cannot easily select URLs in either the desktop or iPhone to copy them and paste them to a browser. On the iPhone, it's almost like there's an extra layer in front of the text at times.

@MissGayle no, the servers don't even allow to send emails unencrypted, so all the emails must be e2e encrypted, there is no data mining, in fact the #ArcaneChat and #DeltaChat apps focus on removing all possible metadata from email even if you use them with ex. #gmail, you don't even need to use arcanechat.me server, you can even setup your own, unlike #protonmail and #tutanota, this is not a silo that requires to use their specific app with their specific central server

@Tutanota Hello, last month, I canceled my subscription before it expired. So the payment would not automatically renew. Yesterday, when I logged into my account, I received a warning that I would not be able to receive or send emails unless I paid. So I decided to renew my entire subscription. I paid for 1 year. But today I saw that it was still on the Free plan. So I can't write to you directly. Please solve the problem. #tuta #tutanota

Took a while, but I finally installed Nextcloud on my home server. Have to say, after some hefty configuration, this is really great. It's a nice replacement for Google Drive. It even supports 2FA!

Now the real challenge is going to be migrating all of my accounts that use my Gmail address to Tutanota.

I have been looking for a free email provider, and thought I'd give Tuta a try. As I understand, they don't support any email standards like pop3 or imap4, you have to use their software. But I'm on Linux, that could be a problem.

Looks like they have a Linux download, let me just take a look. Ah, an AppImage.

./tuta --appimage-extract

Will you look at that, a bunch of files naned Electron*. an Chromium*.

Look, if I wanted Google to get their grubby paws on my email, I would use Gmail...

Hallo Tuta Team! 👋

Registered for #tutanota mail today, tested it, liked it. 3 dollar per month seems fair (after all, I just want mail - no VPN, no password manager, no bullshit) Wanted to import my existing mails, but that is only possible if I pay $9 per month.

Sorry, @Tutanota. But that's greedy. If I cannot import my mails as a paying customer and have to keep my old provider for mail history, than I won't switch. I don't want to pay for 2 accounts.

I'm concerned about #email. Seems like if privacy is important to you, and you don't want to host it yourself, there are two options: #protonmail and #tutanota. Neither is perfect, especially if you're interested in voting with your wallet.

Proton's CEO has said some troubling things recently and over the years. Tuta is used by the United States' current first family, and Tuta's CEO seems thrilled about that.

I mean, if either delivers what they claim, your data should be safe regardless.
