I've used #Protonmail for years. I became interested in #Tutanota because #Proton left Mastodon, expecting everyone would be fine using #Reddit to get updated information. I will not and cannot move to Reddit. Not only will I not ever support Reddit by being part of it, but I have a lifetime ban at Reddit for mentioning Mastodon in one of their communities. Screw them! I hate them and their CEO! My email provider is important in my life. My email provider said goodbye. We can no longer talk. My email provider doesn't understand me.
BTW, I'm not convinced that the Proton CEO is full on MAGA based on his Ukrainian donations and his support of many liberal organizations and leaders. Thee's no evidence he ever directly supported any Republicans. Please, let's not go there.
Tutanota says they are staying on Mastodon. I feel closer to them. So, I decided to begin testing the waters with Tutanota.
My problem with Tutanota is, always was, the name. It took me 3 months to remember Tutanota because I don't speak Latin. To me, it was random letters. They changed it to #Tutamail, but this is still, for me, a problem. I have a quiet voice. At the doctor's office or on the phone with a rep, when they ask me for my email address and I say tutamail, what they will hear is "doodamail". Jerry has an email address, doo da, doo da. And Americans pronounce "T" as "D" (as in "I hate Zuck and Meda"), so the conversation would go like this: No, not "DOO DA mail", not "TUDAmail", not, "tootamail", not "tudormail", not "2Dmail"... That person will struggle to find a word, but there isn't one. It's just 4 random characters the person never saw together. I will just frustrate them.
The other problem is the pain of changing email addresses. If I used my own domain name from the start, and not used protonmail.com and pm.me, then I could just move the domain name. So, thinking ahead this time, to avoid the entire doo da thing, and make it easy to move again, I decided to pay $4.99 for the first year of ninja-email.com. And since custom domains are not available on the Tutamail free plan, I paid the 3 Euro/month for the Revolutionary plan. Not all that expensive for the fun and the learning.
I like ProtonDrive as a secure way to have Cloud storage. It's one current difference. But, PQDrive is on the way from Tutanota, so I'll have my cloud storage eventually.
I will miss not being able to use Thunderbird with Tutanota. But, I always felt that given all the problems with the bridge, Proton will eventually drop it. Tutanota's reason for not having one is that it leaves email unencrypted on the computer. However, my folders are on a Veracrypt encrypted drive, so I'm good with using the bridge.
I don't use the other Proton services. I'm ready to play!
