It has been an interesting week for PC technical issues:
Stardew Valley suddenly couldn't connect online. I play this with my fiancee who lives in another country so it was particularly vexing. Turns out it was a Linux update to 'glibc', a rare update from them that knowlngly broke user-space (A Linux dev no-no). It actually broke Discord too but you didn't see that because Discord got a fix in place in a hurry.
And the Vivaldi browser developed a weird habit of opening KDE's shortcut page in Settings every time it was opened. The culprit here is Chromium, upon which Vivaldi is based, seemingly having introduced this bug in the recent update to v134.
Workarounds are now in place for both, soothing my sanity.

Dear Vivaldi web browser users,
1) How to PREVENT Proton installing
Right-click, do not left-click, but right-click the VPN Button and click REMOVE.
2) How to REMOVE Proton VPN if installed.
Click on the Vivaldi logo, click on tools, click on extensions. This will list ALL your installed browser extensions, and you can click on REMOVE for Proton VPN.
3) How to PREVENT Vivaldi from doing this in the future (see screenshots, alt text included).

Dear Vivaldi,
I like your web browser, and have been very vocal concerning the support and adaption of Vivaldi Browser. But for a company, whose browser starts up claiming "Made with Love in Europe", you picked a company (Proton) that falls under Us Jurisdiction, whose CEO supports Donald Trump and his fellow, Nazis. I am greatly disappointed.

I have been working on a list of businesses outside Us Jurisdiction. On that list is a whole list of VPN providers, outside Us Jurisdiction, which Vivaldi could have easily picked from.

What happened to Vivaldi Browser?
Vivaldi Browser is now bundled with Proton VPN. But Proton (the company) is a registered business in the United States.
There are 200 or so independent countries, territories, and states world-wide. But as you know, corporations do not include terms and conditions for all 200 or so geographical jurisdictions. Businesses only include and worry about the jurisdictions that apply to them.
That said, I would much rather let their own legal documentation speak for itself. Here are their terms concerning Proton. It has whole sections concerning US Customers and US Laws. https://proton.me/wallet/terms A company outside Us Law would not care about American laws, anymore than you would likely care about the law in North Korea, for example.
Proton would like to argue, likely from a public relations standing point, that these terms only apply to Proton Wallet. But that is not how our laws work in the United States. You do not get to pick and choose which department is subject to US Law, anymore than you get to pick which Us Laws you want to follow.
I am really disappointed that Vivaldi Browser, would bundle a company, is clearly subject to Us Laws and Us Jurisdiction.

Still holding onto Safari because it’s ‘just there’?
Time to break free and explore Vivaldi!
Vivaldi has its own ad and tracking blocker system built in. It seems to use uBlock Origin blocking lists. It works fine on Vivaldi for Android where you cannot install uBlock Origin.
@Vivaldi Have you thought about contributing to the https://servo.org project? Or have you already done so?

This might be a PEBKAC, but when you group tabs in @Vivaldi browser on mobile, the menu takes up way much space on my screen. Sure, it goes away when i scroll down, but pops up again when i scroll up.
I either want to be able to minimize it or dismiss it or just hide the other tabs (circles). 20 % of my screen is too much for this.
When you get to use such a good privacy respecting browser for free, you need to support in some other ways. @Vivaldi merch in the snail mail today!
Comparison of Web Browsers (March 2025)
A table comparing the functionalities available in the most-used browsers!
Conclusion:
The results of the comparison aren't as clear in 2025.
Vivaldi, Opera and Firefox are top of the list, with Edge and Brave right behind them.
Chrome and Safari, on the other hand, are the most basic and least customisable options.
The "worst" browsers actually have the highest market shares, probably because they're already preinstalled on iOS and Android.
