Low deposit mortgages are a NOT good thing!

Sure, in the sort term, they may help more people buy a suitable home, but in the long(er) term they continue the inflationary pressure stoked by (relatively) easy credit in the housing market.

Its one more measure that while helping individuals, is socially corrosive by stoking price rises & locking more people into *needing* such price rises to avoid falling into negative equity, due to their low capital share!

You can't supply your way out of the housing crisis if investors and hoarders have a dominant advantage over *home* owners and will just slurp up whatever becomes available.

Limiting negative gearing and ending the capital gains tax discount was the polite way of saying "go make money somewhere else", but stronger alternatives exist - like a straight-up ban on owning more than one residential property.

Last week @HazelChu criticised the government for not doing anything to stop the ludicrous situation whereby we put tourists into houses and people who need houses into hotels.

But I guess there's more money to be made from the status quo.

The €6.7m that the government paid for the use of this Rathmines hotel over ten months works out at €8,600 per room per month. If you bought houses for those people you'd have got your money back in two years.
