"WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT @GOP

"LOOK: never in a million years i thought i'd find myself saying this because i stand for everything opposite to so-called American Patriots"

Tonight, we welcome Shabbat with peace and anticipation.

Tomorrow, as Shabbat ends, we enter a time of national remembrance for October 7 and all those we’ve lost — a moment to honor our resilience and unity.

This Shabbat feels especially meaningful, offering stillness to gather strength, draw close to loved ones, and reflect.

Each candle we light symbolizes hope, guiding us forward.

May this Shabbat bring comfort, peace, and a renewed purpose, filling us with the strength to remember, the courage to continue, and the hope to look ahead.

Shabbat Shalom.

Today in Labor History May 31, 1927: Fred Trump, father Donald Trump, was arrested at a Ku Klux Klan rally in Queens, New York. The Long Island Daily Press reported that all the arrestees, including Trump, were wearing Klan robes. During his presidential campaign, Journalists asked Donald Trump about his father's arrest. He claimed "it never happened."

Today in Labor History May 30, 1937: “Memorial Day massacre:” Police attacked striking steelworkers, shooting many in the back, killing 10 and wounding 100, at the Republic Steel plant in South Chicago. 1937 – In what became known as the Memorial Day Massacre, police open fire on striking steelworkers at Republic Steel in South Chicago, killing 10 and wounding more than 160. The press called it the “Red Massacre,” as if to justify police violence and murder of working-class people.

"Youth Mourning," George Clausen, 1916.

Clausen (1852-1944) was a British painter and printmaker. He worked in various media and schools during his life, but became a prominent landscape artist, eventually being knighted in 1927.

He was an official war artist during WWI and his daughter's fiancé was killed in action. Here he represents the hideous loss of an entire generation and loss felt by those left behind.

From the Imperial War Museum, London.

Decided to post this anyway... my father-in-law's funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. He was fortunate, and while career Army and decorated for valor, lived a long life.

So many did not.

The stillness of this place is crushing. Like the names on the Vietnam Memorial, I cannot walk by either one without sobbing.

Thank you. To the ones who are gone, and to the ones they've left behind.

Though I recognize the sacrifices my father, his brother who won awards for heroism in the liberation of Holland, my mother's brother who saw the carnage at Gardelegen right after the massacre happened there and who captured an SS officer, my mother's half-brother who was in the landing at Anzio and marched into Russia, seeing so much death and destruction that he committed suicide following the war: I recognize and honor these sacrifices.

The Pearl Harbor attack was the only part of his WWII experiences about which he'd ever talk. He was in the Pacific theater throughout the war, and would not speak about what he saw and lived through after Pearl Harbor.

About Pearl Harbor, he said the attack occurred early in the day with no warning. He and others aboard his ship were asleep when it began. He was wounded by shrapnel from an exploding bomb, but not seriously.

For the US Memorial Day holiday, Elliot Kirschner features a video of Dan Rather interviewing men who were American soldiers at Pearl Harbor and who lived through that attack. The video is embedded in Kirschner's article.

My father was among those soldiers who lived through the Pearl Harbor attack. He was a Marine aboard the "USS Pennsylvania" when the attack occurred. He was 21 years old.

"'Not one mention of a fallen soldier who died for our country because Trump calls them losers. Just more grievance about him. Trump doesn’t care about you or the country.'

KTLA journalist David Lazarus said: 'The simple fact is that if we did away with the archaic Electoral College, a man like this would never again get within reach of the presidency.'"

"Former President Donald Trump's Memorial Day remarks were met with fierce backlash from a slew of journalists, legal and political experts Monday."

The man posted a statement on his Truth Social attacking Judges Lewis Kaplan, Arthur Engoron, and Juan Merchan, ranting about "human scum." The statement, which begins, "Happy Memorial Day," is quoted in the linked article.
