PewDiePie, once the king of YouTube, has now decided to stop shannigans and move to GNU / Linux operating system. And not simply to move to GNU / Linux, but stop using Photoshop and move to GNU Image Manipulation program, known as GIMP. Go back to using OBS. And even gave a rather okay-ish explanation of GNU / Linux and his reasons to move to it, to his 1...

blenderdumbass . orgPewDiePie is now using GNU / Linux

Welp, #PewDiePie has opened the floodgates to the #Linux community now that he's actually done a full video explaining his move to Linux, why he did it, and why he thinks others should ditch #Windows.

I honestly expected a
nothing burger video with not much meaning/input to it, esp to someone who's already on Linux, but his points were pretty interesting. Some of his takeaways:

- He was tired of
#Microsoft's bullshit concerning ads, #AI slop, and bloat - and noted how he really supports the idea of #FOSS, and gave the example of how cool it is that #Valve saw the issue on putting all of their/our eggs (shares) in Windows' basket and addressed that by building on top of an existing FOSS project, #Wine to then develop #Proton, which as a result has unlocked and enabled the expansive #gaming scene that we have today not just for the #SteamDeck but all Linux users as a whole.

- He surprisingly loves the customisation aspect of Linux and how everything is modular - which meant we could change things like the GUI (desktop environment) and customise it as desired. He even (appropriately) used the term,
ricing lol.

- He, even more surprisingly, loves the fact that there are many Linux distros to choose from - when some find this to be somewhat a
hurdle. He highlighted how you should just pick one and move forward, which is often true - this choice doesn't really matter as much these days (if ever). His choice was #LinuxMint, the distro he's tried 15 years ago.

- He noted how, like anything, Linux isn't perfect and there may be sacrifice(s) needed - like how some apps may only be available on Windows, for
#macOS, and likewise for Linux. His sacrifice was #Adobe #Photoshop, but he was happy to ditch the thing (which costed him 60 USD just to unsubscribe), and his chosen alternative was... #GIMP - I know some might not agree, but he liked it 😂

- He mentioned how searching (locally) on Windows is garbage, and everyone knows that's just... objectively true. Like him, I too was amazed how local search actually JUST WORKS and is super fast on Linux, unlike on Windows or macOS.

- He noted how goddamn easy and intuitive installing/updating/managing apps are on Linux by using the system's package manager (app store), rather than having to look up the app installer online and dodging all of the shady sites with malwares and so on.

- As if this wasn't enough, Pewds really went down a fucking rabbit hole, almost putting to 'shame' for most, all
average Linux users (incl myself) by literally installing/using #ArchLinux on his laptop, which is normal, 'cept he's not using a regular DE like #KDE or #Gnome but he instead, opted for a tiling manager, #Hyprland with #Rofi, #Waybar and all lol.

Anyway, it's a pretty cool video - and I underestimated Pewds' love for tinkering and using the terminal, so much so that I hope his users don't think that they
actually need to use the terminal for the things he did haha.

I need help with GIMP 3.0, this is driving me mad!!

I open a JPEG file, then I save it as JPEG and GIMP erases all the existing EXIF tags.

In the Preferences window, I went to Import&Export and the "Export Exif metadata by default when available" option is correctly checked.

What happens??? Please, anyone! #GIMP

Spinner Reduction Surgery

By 1991 "Miss Angela" had been transferred from owner Robert "Bob" Pond to his very own museum located at the airport in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Her stay at Planes of Fame East was short, when just two years later, she was traded (along with a Douglas A-1 Skyraider) for a Boeing B-17 that Pond soon also christened "Miss Angela" after his granddaughter.

Non Destructive Editing on GIMP 3.0

The day has arrived, the brand new version of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) has arrived with new features and changes to the default behavior of its many tools, changes which could disrupt your workflow, Me myself had an issue with a new feature which caused me to believe there was a major bug, so let me tell how to solve it.

Non-Destructive Editing

This new feature of GIMP 3.0 makes the filters (levels, blur, threshold, etc) to remain active on the layer they were applied to, so if the layer is modified the filter is applied to it.

This might sound a little complex, so here is a diagram on how it works

How Non-destructive editing works

Pay attention to figures 3 and 4. In figure 3 we change the image adding a rectangle and the result is shown in figure 4, the newly added rectangle appears with the blur effect applied to it.

Notice the blur effect was not applied twice, the existing elements and the new rectangle have the same amount of blur in them, as if the unfiltered layer is stored in memory and when we modify it the filter is applied.

As the diagram shows, you can imagine it as if the filters were «floating» over the unfiltered image so any modifications done are filtered along the the existing parts.

This also means that the parameters of the filter can be changed in any moment, so if we wish to increase or reduce the blur it can be done and it will affect the entire layer.

It might sounds complicated but for profesional illustrations it makes sense, this way if the filter needs to be changed it can be done without having to Ctrl+Z the latest hours of work, so this new feature is very handy, except for a little problem…

This WASN’T how the filter behaved on the previous stable version of GIMP.

Confusion

So how does this new behavior looks like to someone who just jumped from GIMP 2 to GIMP 3?

Confusing to the degree I honestly believed GIMP 3 was released with a major bug on the bucket fill tool, which has a very odd interaction with one of the filters when the Non-destructive editing (NDE) is active in the layer you’re using it.

The filter in question was the threshold which I use to remove the anti aliasing from the lineart allowing me to use the bucket fill to quickly color the image. Let me show you what happens.

First we use the threshold in a greyscale layer to remove the anti aliasing.

Threshold filter

Now we convert the layer to RGB

Setting image to RGB

Now we color a part of the drawing with the Bucket fill tool

Coloring part of the drawing

And when we color another part…

The previously colored version changed color

The previously colored area turns white or the colors distort.

This is a very odd behavior, makes sense if you remember that the threshold filter is still active over the layer we are coloring and this is the expected behavior but this wasn’t the behavior in the previous versions.

Solution

So, this is the new default behavior, Is there a way to change it ?

Yes

If you look at the lower part of the filter dialog you will see a checkbox with the legend «Merge filter»

Merge Filter

If you check that box the filter will be applied intermediately and won’t remain active after that, exactly the behavior of the previous versions plus this checkbox keeps checked or unchecked even after closing and reopening the application, so if this new behavior was an issue this is the permanent solution.

The other alternative is using the Merge Filter function in new Fx button in the layers dialog, to access it press the Fx button in the layer the filter is active and press «Merge Filters», this will apply the filters over the layer and those will not longer active.

Layer Effects

Once you have use any of both options you can continue coloring as usual

Colors applied

Hope this information helps you to use more effectively this new version of the GIMP and if you find this contents useful and want to help us create more hints and tips on how to use GIMP.

Multiple Bob's are Back

Shame on me (being the first Bob), for not posting in three months! Honest, I have been busy, primarily with heavy-duty household projects that had to be completed before the Florida Heat is upon us. Spare time was spent digitizing my DC-3 books and locating internet images. I have catalogued some 75,000 images for future reference in developing my art.

Unfortunately, I did not find many new images for today's subject, the C-41A with MSN 2145. This unique aircraft has an unusual history, and until recently seems to have been camera-shy.

When collector Robert (the second Bob) Pond acquired MSN 2145 in 1989, he had her painted to resemble the scheme applied to U.S. Navy aircraft during the beginning of World War II. Her nickname, "Miss Angela" honors his granddaughter (and was later applied to a Boeing B-17). I modified the previous release of this livery to reflect her appearance a year earlier than before, while she still sported the massive prop spinners. Her coloration has been revised as well. This livery will appear again, sans spinners, for a subsequent owner shortly.

🚩 GIMP 3.0.2 Portable for Windows

I use portable apps on Windows to easily migrate apps between laptops. However, the PortableApps.com website has fallen behind on many app releases over the last year. Luckily, I found a nice portable version of GIMP 3.0.2 for Windows here: github.com/sylale/gmic-qt/rele

I just installed it onto Windows 10 ✌😀

A #GIMP WIP inspired by a @prokoudine LibreArts article.

It's a Total Ink Coverage display filter! A simple algorithm that shows how much CMYK ink is being used in a particular part of the image. This is useful to know for printing, as different paper has different ink limits.

I want to integrate it with the soft-proofing pop-over as well, but this is a nice start.

"The GNOME 46 runtime is no longer supported as of April 17, 2025. Please ask your application developer to migrate to a supported platform."

... net.lutris.Lutris, org.gimp.GIMP"

Haha, yeah because I have power to "ask MY application developer" to do that!

It's not like @lutris or @GIMP are going to be unaware of it or anything. :blobcatfacepalm:
