ML/AI, Typographic Design, and the Four “I”s

During this talk I will touch on Intuition, Insight, and Inspiration. First I will set the context by introducing the Letter Spirit project and its microdomain — work I published exactly 30 years ago as a Ph.D. student of Doug Hofstadter’s. I will spend some time discussing the role of roles (and other mental structures) in creativity and human perception. Then I’ll take a quick run through the current state of “AI” (really ML) so we get a feeling of how LLMs actually work. We will talk about WHAT MACHINES and relate them to human cognition. Finally, just as I get around to intuition, insight, and inspiration, I will run out of time.

arXiv.orgLarge Language Model agents can coordinate beyond human scaleLarge Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed as interacting agents, forming ``LLM societies''. Understanding whether these societies can self-organize and coordinate on norms without external influence is crucial to understand their risks and opportunities. Here we explore their opinion dynamics finding that it is governed by a majority force coefficient such that LLM societies can spontaneously reach consensus only up to a critical group size. This critical size grows exponentially with the language understanding capabilities of the models, exceeding the typical size of informal human groups for advanced LLMs. These results reveal emerging self-organization properties in LLM societies and provide insights for designing collaborative AI systems where coordination is either a goal or a risk.

Title: ”Sketching a Picture of Vector Symbolic Architectures”

Abstract : Sketching algorithms are a broad area of research in theoretical computer science and numerical analysis that aim to distil data into a simple summary, called a "sketch," that retains some essential notion of structure while being much more efficient to store, query, and transmit.

Vector-symbolic architectures (VSAs) are an approach to computing on data represented using random vectors, and provide an elegant conceptual framework for realizing a wide variety of data structures and algorithms in a way that lends itself to implementation in highly-parallel and energy-efficient computer hardware.

Sketching algorithms and VSA have a substantial degree of consonance in their methods, motivations, and applications. In this tutorial style talk, I will discuss some of the connections between these two fields, focusing, in particular, on the connections between VSA and tensor-sketches, a family of sketching algorithms concerned with the setting in which the data being sketched can be decomposed into Kronecker (tensor) products between more primitive objects. This is exactly the situation of interest in VSA and the two fields have arrived at strikingly similar solutions to this problem.
