Librarians are dangerous: A public service announcement by Brad Montague

Dear Enthusiasts,

I write to you today as a concerned citizen.
Many aren’t brave enough to say it, but the time has come. So, I will say it:

Librarians are dangerous.

(Dramatic music should be playing in your head right now.)

You thought they were just keepers of the quiet. Guardians of the “shhh.”
The ones who handed you a dusty book and pointed to a beanbag chair.

Wrong.

Sala Rusconi

In the Archiginnasio there is a room called the Sala Rusconi. Named after Pietro Giacomo Rusconi (1865-1916), it contains many rare and valuable books and manuscripts which were collected by him. These were donated to Bologna after the death of his wife Luisa Verzaglia in 1919 - as the couple had not had any children. You unfortunately cannot go into the room now but you can peek through the iron bar door from the Sala Stabat Mater.
The portrait you see over the door is Rusconi himself.
I wanted to give the photo the feel of an old-fashioned illustration to compliment the treasures and antiquities in this library.

(Per quelli che sanno un po' di dialetto bolognese, non trovate un po' ironico che ci sia una sala così piena di saggezza e storia e si chiama... Rusco... ni. 😂)

I'm pretty open about being a #librarian fanboy. They're super heros. They really are. And my librarian she says what they're doing now is using Hoopla for access to some of those titles because Hoopla is a private company that holds their own collection and referring people there. The government can't regulate that and Hoopla sells by access not by title. So it's all or nothing. But they still hide things. I know where they are 😁 #books #library theguardian.com/books/2025/apr

The Guardian · Librarians in UK increasingly asked to remove books, as influence of US pressure groups spreadsBy Ella Creamer
I'll never get tired of Helsinki Central Library Oodi. It was built as a present to people when Finland turned 100 a couple of years ago. It's across from the parliament so the power keepers would not who they work for. It has 3D printers, lazer cutters, sewing machines, instruments, audio and music studios, workspaces, and of course, a ton of books, all free to use and borrow with your library card. It's such a treat, so awesome values (the first picture is from the stairs where they have written who is welcome to Oodi - everyone), great symbolism, and neat things to do. And exceptional architecture!

Libraries are under assault.

A 🧵 about what authors can do to support them:

I've been touring every local #library in the PGH Carnegie library system and getting my library passport stamped. Then posting about that and telling folks delightful stories about my adventures and encouraging them to *just use the library* because they get funding based on circulation.

Watched The Substance movie that I borrowed from the library today. It was hard to watch especially since I hadn't realized that it would trigger my suppressed memories of the spinal tap I had when I was five and had encephalitis. I do see why Demi Moore received nominations and awards for her performance though.

I will be taking the DVD back to the library tomorrow and will be borrowing Every Little Thing that should be much easier to watch.
