The Grenzland Campaign is coming to a close after almost 9 years. Tomorrow we'll have our "diplomacy game debriefing session" and next weeks friday will be the very last in person session.

It will be a time to look back, revisit some highlights, and maybe even revive the one or other character. I exepect we won't need any rules for that very last session.

Just let ideas flow freely, and I hope to get some nice impressions of seasoned characters riding off into the sunset.

On the subject of how rules differ between versions...

OD&D/LBBs - the spell "Cure Light Wounds" heals d6+1 same for potion.

AD&D/1e - the spell "Cure Light Wounds" heals d8 (no +1 pip), but the potion is 2d4+2!

OD&D/LBBs - natural healing is every other day (even days), complete rest required.

AD&D/1e - natural healing every day, complete rest required. CON factors into this (penalties always, bonuses after 1st wk).

Gets me EVERY TIME I switch games!

Another wild & crazy OD&D session!

Imagine, if you will, this beach scene: a elf-mage laying on his back, recovering from death. A cleric running his hands through sand looking for dropped gold coins. Another cleric pining for whales or dolphins to talk to. A fighter surveying a boat consumed in magical fire. An elven fighter rubbing his brow in the most "wtfjusthappened" way. A human mage plotting how to sacrifice the sleeping guards to the demon idol for more lucky gems.

Second day of our #osr Weekend in the Harz Mountains. After some of our characters barely survived yesterday’s dungeon crawl in the #PalaceOfTheVampireQueen we stick to #odnd trying out the wilderness exploration rules (original plan was to switch to Adnd). Random encounters quickly pushed our group into a f****** Fantasy Vietnam Situation, where the characters have to deal with 90 (…) brigants in an unpleasant swamp which is also inhabited by ghosts which are also after our poor characters.

Continued thread

Managing in game time is a major concern in campaign games, as you all probably know from that infamous all caps quote in the DMG.

But here's OD&D's take (Vol III, p26):

"1 week of actual time = 1 week of game time"

right 1:1 timing. But also:

"Dungeon Expedition = 1 week"

I always wondered why it's stated lke that. The answer is: to facilitate weekly dungeon crawls within an ongoing 1:1 time campaign game. In between delves the adventurers need time to recuperate anyway. So that's a nice and useful abstraction.

Finally:

"Wilderness Adventure = 1 move = 1 day"

Incidentally 6 days of travelling plus 1 day of rest seems to be about what can be played out in one session, given there are maybe 2-4 significant encounters along the way.

In the campaign game we do weekly turns. And I feel like time wise everything seems to just fall into place neatly. Smart rules.

Tonight's OD&D game saw the players using a strange orb (that somehow channels the "spirit" of the megadungeon) like a grenade and blowing apart a glowing beam of light so they could get 400 gold coins that were floating inside.

And there was carousing so a mage could level up.

Helluva game!

If you ever wanted to know how some of the weird inconsistencies of 1e/2e D&D combat came about, this analysis of the Chainmail "Man to Man" weapon vs armor matrix is interesting!

I continue to enjoy the more abstract Troop Type combat for most situations, but in a duel or a meeting of higher level characters vs. monster/NPC, Man to Man is an option!

Tonight's game was some OD&D as it should be. First the party of levels 1 through 5 survived an attack by three Manticores, later they explored the lair of eight Ogres. Carefully coordinated sleep spells and time honored choke point tactics led to some decent treasure, a subdued Manticore and two Ogre henchmen. They lost one poor halfling and never made it to the dungeon though 😅

By this point the Grenzland Campaign has grown to a geographical size, it just seems futile to even try to prep. I just have no idea which turn the players will take.

All I can do is keep track, update locations that where visited and let it run by itself.

I'm very hesitant to expand the map even one single hex, but it happens occasionally 😅

Tonight's crazy OD&D game:
- The PCs robbed a group of NPCs of their spell books (so the clerics could get their Level 2 spells). By robbed, I mean they waylaid them to 0hp.
- Then they bought curtain fabric from Bodb, the wandering dungeon merchant who has a pegleg/eyepatch and hook for hand.
- They ran away from a crazed werewolf and fled the dungeon from Level 4 up to Lvl 1 and out. 2 of the players at 2 hp. 1 player went to 0hp due to his bearing magical orbs, upon leaving.
