Worryingly, the Trump administration is showing signs it will try to override rules protecting endangered species in the Bay & Delta.

"The Trump administration is proposing to eliminate the rules entirely and just go for broke, which will result in the destruction of the San Francisco Bay ecosystem. Several extinctions, permanent closures of fisheries," as our lead scientist @jarosenfield told ABC7 News: abc7news.com/post/scientists-e

From CalMatter's 2024 environmental milestones in review: Sadly, low #salmon numbers prompted a 2nd consecutive closure of the #fishing season, and a third-year cancellation is possible. But on the positive side, 2024 brought much-needed protections for White Sturgeon & Longfin Smelt -- two native fishes we've fought long & hard for! calmatters.org/environment/202 @CALMatters #sturgeon #longfinsmelt #smelt #cawater #californiawater #endangeredspecies #endangeredspeciesact

#MonarchButterflies Might Soon Be Listed as #Threatened Under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct

If a new proposal is adopted, the insects would become the most commonly seen species to be the subject of federal protection under this law

Gayoung Lee
December 11, 2024

"For generations, monarch butterflies have traveled thousands of miles across North America in remarkable, long-distance migrations. But like many other pollinators, human activity and climate change have cast a shadow over the future of these beloved insects.

"In response, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is taking a step toward protecting monarchs: The agency proposed listing monarch butterflies as threatened under the Endangered Species Act on Tuesday, which would extend federal protection to the species. The proposal will be subject to a 90-day public comment period before potentially taking effect."

Both of these pressures are driving horseshoe crabs toward #extinction. So in 2024 the Center for Biological Diversity petitioned the federal government to protect them under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct.

As we wait for that process to unspool, these ancient creatures desperately need help from the states where they live.

Several states, including #Connecticut and #NewJersey, already have laws banning the harvest of horseshoe crabs.

Newsom failed to take advantage of an opportunity to "Trump-proof" the state's water operations in 2019--and his alternative guidelines don't stop fish from dying:

“We're distinguishing between two different speeds to extinction, not a choice between extinction and not extinction,” as our science director @jarosenfield put it.

IMPERILED CORALS

#ClimateChange, #pollution and other threats have put five fragile #coral species at high risk in the Indo-Pacific, the tropical waters from the #IndianOcean to the western and central #Pacific.

A decade ago #NOAA Fisheries protected all five coral species under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct, but it didn't grant them critical #habitat — even though science shows that species with critical habitat are twice as likely to recover as those without it.

EXTINCTION IS FOREVER

Two men were just charged with illegally killing a staggering 3,600 #birds, including bald eagles.

#BaldEagles are just one of the many species that the #EndangeredSpeciesAct saved from #extinction.

But the Endangered Species Act is under attack -- and if we don't stand up for it, this kind of mass killing of #wildlife could soon become the new normal.

Tell the #Biden administration: Give #manatees the highest protections under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct

I urge you to re-list the West Indian manatee subpopulations, including the #Florida manatee, as endangered. One-fifth of Florida manatees died in the last two years alone. Their #population can’t sustain such heavy losses.

#Pollution in the water has created massive algal blooms which block the sun from reaching the sea floor, killing the #seagrass

#EnvironmentalAction supporters have sent tens of thousands of messages to the state government calling for protection for #Wyoming 's wolves.

But we can't count on Wyoming deciding to do the right thing alone. Right now, the wolves of the #NorthernRockies region -- including Wyoming's population -- are the only #GrayWolves in the U.S. that do not have #EndangeredSpeciesAct protections. That's why we're also working to convince the #Biden administration to restore federal protections.

blown-apart bodies left in the matted grasses of their prairie dog town. And then, a single prairie dog raised her head out of a burrow and stood up and faced me. I froze in place, unable to avoid her gaze. She disappeared underground.

On that day, I made a vow, short of standing in front of my father’s #rifle, that I would be their ally. I have tried to keep that vow.

I graduated from high school in 1973, the same year the #EndangeredSpeciesAct was signed into law.

The story of the Andalucian wolves is similar. Spain once had Europe's largest wolf population, but targeted eradication meant only a few hundred were left by the 1970's.

Here's where the stories differ:

In the US, the passage of the #EndangeredSpeciesAct provided the shelter wolves needed to begin to recover. Today, hunting and trapping still threaten wolves where protection has since been eliminated --

The reintroduction of #wolves has been one of the great success stories of the #EndangeredSpeciesAct. The Fish and Game Commission's recent vote is a concerning step in the wrong direction for this incredible species.

#Idaho wolf populations are already on the decline -- 13% in one year alone, by Fish and Game's own estimate.

Please end the wolf hunts now. 🐺🌿

These attacks on the #EndangeredSpeciesAct are part of a larger plan to undermine and ultimately destroy the ESA. This is a concern for #wolves and other threatened or #EndangeredSpecies, as the ESA is what they depend on for protection. If the ESA is weakened or destroyed, it will be much harder to protect wolves and other species. This could mean more wolf hunting and a greater likelihood of wiping wolves from our landscape completely - again.
