The first support I pulled was surprisingly intact. Some thickness gone around the buried part and completely waterlogged, but still very strong. It was oak! Amazing stuff.

Would've probably lasted another decade. I thought maybe I'm wasting my time here, but the other two were not oak and crumbled away when applying slight leverage, so it was high time to do this.

Gonna dry out that oak one and re-use it for something.

A broken and rotten log that was buried in the soil. It was buried deeper but the rest broke off and was spongy and very weak. The bark at the edge is rotted away too and the rot extends upwards into the section above ground.
Part of the oak support, which had to be cut to remove it. About half a meter of it is dark brown and has lost ~2-3cm diameter, but the remaining material is still strong and it would not break even with the 1.5m lever on top. It was completely waterlogged though. The soil edge is clean and no rot extends upwards to the unburied part. There's some powderpost beetle damage near the top as well though.

Solitaire

This was captured in February during the middle of winter.
Camped in Yosemite Valley a snow storm moved through the valley dumping about 8 inches of snow.
As I made my way through the village in the morning I saw this fabulous snow covered oak tree and decided it would make a good subject for a photo. It's not really solitaire but it did stand out from al the other trees around.

Solitaire I captured this magnificent snow covered oak tree after a winter storm moved through Yosemite Valley overnight. The foreground of the image is an unbroken field of snow, pure as can be. The large oak tree is framed on both sides by a few smaller snow covered trees. The large oak towers over the other trees in the area. The branches are heavy with snow. The sky in the background is gray and overcast. This is a color image but the snow and low clouds give it an appearance of being a black and white image unless looked at closely you can see some color in the trunks of the trees.
