I think the one thing I am not happy concerning NixOS is the lack of a GUI VPN (not Flatpak).
I, know how to use the terminal, but I can repeat how to use it until I am blue in the face, and pass out, but that knowledge and wisdom will wash over the other person who needs it. They'll hear me, but forget the moment I walk out of the room. If it is not graphical, they're not learning it.

Most #VPN "providers" actually belong to a few conglomerates that also run various "affiliate" programs, plus "VPN testing websites" that happen to recommend their own products:
https://vpnpro.com/blog/hidden-vpn-owners-unveiled-97-vpns-23-companies/
Picking one depends on what you want to achieve.
E.g., if you want to bypass geoblocking for gaming etc., possibly requiring low latency, you'll probably be happier with one of the market leaders. They can rent and set up thousands of servers, with their respective IPs evading the blocks, for a while.
If you care about ethics and privacy, simply want to shift trust away from your ISP, and can lve with being blocked because you've picked a VPN provider with a limited set of servers, the choice is essentially between #Mullvad @mullvadnet and #IVPN @ivpn.
Some people also count #ProtonVPN in here, but the diversification strategy of the company has led to some decisions that don't inspire trust in me.
Looks like the open-source application firewall Portmaster has been acquired by the VPN provider IVPN.
I have tried out Portmaster in the past, it worked quite well. It is GPL licensed and will hopefully stay that way. But in my experience, an acquisition of a widely used open-source tool usually leads to a non-foss license change down the line, let's hope that doesn't happen here... there are no indicators of that happening other than my own cynicism. But my cynicism has been well-fed over the last years by corporations acquiring and enshittifying previously open-source projects. Maybe IVPN is different, I know nothing about them.
https://safing.io/blog/2024/12/03/a-new-chapter-begins/#disabled
#Safing, developers of Portmaster (open-source application #firewall) and SPN (Safing Privacy Network) have been friendly acquired by #IVPN.
"This decision comes after months of collaboration and careful consideration, and we believe it will bring significant benefits to our users and the privacy community as a whole."
"...no unexpected changes:
* #Portmaster and #SPN will remain open source.
* IVPN is committed to maintaining and improving the software and services you rely on.
* IVPN has no plans to change the business model, pricing, or policies in ways that would present a disadvantage."
question for those using @ivpn on @GrapheneOS
my ivpn app cannot see wifi ssids, so i can't mark them as trusted/untrusted. this occurs on both the owner profile and others, and i've enabled all permissions
it just shows "<unknown ssid>", as shown in the attached screenshot
is this expected? maybe due to grapheneos restricting something?
