Hello Kitty is based on Dutch Miffy, created by Dick Bruna in 1953. 20 years later copied with Hello Kitty by Yuko Shimizu.
Miffy is a girl-rabbit.
There have been lawsuits through the years.
Not resulting in a complete win for Dick Bruna, but certain characters are forbidden in European versions of Hello Kitty.
They are both popular worldwide, Miffy even to the extreme in Japan :)

This portfolio was published by the Groninger Museum to accompany their 1996 exhibition Dick Bruna: The Smell of Success. The folder was designed by Swip Stolk, the designer for the Groninger Museum at that time.
