la buona fisioterapia è quando per affrontare il dolore non ci si affida solo al senso comune e al principio di autorità ma ogni passo (ed i propri bias) vengono valutati con pensiero critico.

"bias is not a crime, is not necessarily intentional, and is not a sign of lack of integrity; rather, it is a natural human fenomenon"

così si fa luce nella migliore tradizione Saganica in un'epoca per molti versi decisamente scura

@mekkaokereke as a former physical therapist I can attest that women are qualified and excellent at coaching men in matters of athletic performance. We just don't see it for what it is.

The people who help you relearn how to walk after a stroke, rehab from ACL surgery, return to jogging after back pain, or jump again after an Achilles injury are all coaches at the end of the day... and most of them are women.

It's in a medical setting, but we're applying principles of athletic performance to the daily lives of ordinary people who may or may not have needed that coaching for athletic gain.

Oh, but they're at vastly different levels?

Do we really think that people who can train someone with a spinal cord injury to stand again by helping them recruit 20% more quad muscle can't also train someone to run faster?

Women have been doing this all along. We just discount what they do because we're not used to seeing them in the role of advisors.

Well, now that the cat it’s out of the bag, let me show you the poster (call it infographic if you want) I did for my friends and colleagues who published this Delphy study on neck related shoulder pain.

Kudos to Néstor Requejo, Enrique Lluch and Rubén Fernández for their great work here.

As far as I know, my @ is the first Mastodon handle to apear in the Physical Therapy journal, ever (I’m doing my part!).

Realised there's been mostly negativity in my posts recently so let's change that... kind of.

For as long as I can remember I've had stiffness in both my neck and upper back, with a side of pain and restricted movement. This morning I've got a #Physiotherapy appointment to hopefully help me with it!

Never done this kind of thing before so I'm a bit nervous about it. Should be fine though.

Calling all healthcare professionals...

Are you aware that many people, especially those who are Autistic or otherwise neurodivergent, have sensory processing differences?

They (we) will often experience the sensory world differently, meaning they might have much more intense or much less intense experiences and reactions to sensory input from the environment than others.

This can be amazing in lots of ways (joy from vibrant colours, lovely intense smells from flowers that others don't experience...)

But it can also be very challenging in other ways (for example feeling nauseous from others' perfume, pain from bright florescent lights, pain and high anxiety from loud beeping machines or low electricity hums).

If you work in or run a clinic, ward or department with in or outpatients, chances are many will experience some level of discomfort from the sensory environment there.

Many (but not all) of these aspects can be adapted to be pleasant for everyone.
Light bulbs could be changed to be less bright, or dimmed, quiet rooms offered where possible, ear plugs/headphones offered.

You could ask each person if there are any aspects of the clinic/ward environment that is bothering them, and see what can be done about it.

Sometimes just listening and acknowledging there's even a problem is validating and reassuring.

Although I arrived in here a couple of weeks ago, I immediately succumbed to Covid, and I have not yet done my #Introduction toot. So this is it. I am one of the many migrants from the BirdSite, although at present I am keeping a precarious foot in both camps. If my twittering past is any guide to the future, my Mastodon toots are likely to swing wildly from sensible #respiratory / #physiotherapy information to ironic comment on political issues, interspersed with my personal trivia. And dogs.
